I have had success in gaining press release coverage by coming up with the right angle or “hook” to ignite the interest of the media – starting with the title. Tying something into a news making headline, holiday theme, or other topic of interest has always been a plus. I then tailor-make media lists by hand selecting categories, and personalizing which editor, producer, or other booking contact is the appropriate fit.
Black and others say you should assume no one is going to read beyond the first paragraph, which makes it the most important. Many releases also take up a journalistic style, beginning with a dateline, or the city and state the news is coming from.
“There aren’t really a prescriptive number of pages or word count.” If I may add one important aspect from journalism school 101: any article for a newspaper (and a press release ideally ends up as an article “as if” the journalist had written it him/herself) needs to be structured in such a way, that you can clip from the end (!!!) without it losing stringency and closure. That is entirely different from creative writing. “A Winter’s tale” or an Agatha Christie whodunit would lose much, if not all, of its charm if you left out the last, say, two, paragraphs! But since (in the olden days) a piece of journalism needed to fit in with the rest of the layout (including advertising and late breaking news), whoever redacted a piece had to be able to cut off bits and pieces at the end without having to read, let alone reformulate the rest of the article. That said, this rule still stands today though space is not always a bottleneck in the digital world (but – you never know, maybe your press release even makes it into the print version!). So train yourself to write like a (good) journalist. If you don’t you could wonder for years what made your press releases fall by the wayside time and again.
As we uploaded each release, we looked for ease of use, additional complementary services, paid-for upgrades and whether registration was required to use the service. Each release was amended slightly so that we could identify if it were covered by other sites we would be able to identify which source they had got it from.
Would you prefer to follow some old school thought for your business or brand’s recognition? Definitely not! Following the old school of thought is not advantageous for your business anymore. It can seek to ruin all the efforts that you have made to build your brand. Success comes to us when we follow a new school of thought and the current trends. Similarly, when it comes to devising a public relations strategy, you need to come up with strong content to represent your brand.
Although the utilization of press release material can save a company time and money, it makes the distributed boring and similar to the output of other firms. In the digital age, consumers want to get their information instantly and this puts pressure on media companies to output as much material as possible. This often causes them to heavily rely on the use of press releases in order to create their stories.[8]
A press release is a written communication that reports specific but brief information about an event, circumstance or other happening. It’s typically tied to a business or organization and is provided to media through a variety of means.
With that being said, a few years back, Google started to realize that paid and free press release distribution services were simply being used as a spam tactic, so it has taken a more hardline stance on using them.
The European Geosciences Union (EGU) is now accepting applications for the 7th edition of its Science Journalism Fellowship competition. The fellowships enable journalists to report on ongoing research in the Earth, planetary or space sciences, with successful applicants receiving up to €5000 to cover expenses related to their projects. The deadline for applications is 5 December.
F. Description. This part is the main body of your press release, and should (and I’ll just quote Dave) “explain in concise detail exactly what your app does, what features and benefits it provides, and why people should care”. A great addition to the app explanation is a nice and short quote from you or from a partner. Besides being pretty fun to write, it lets you bring up a different aspect of the app. Here’s a good post on how to write a killer press release quote.
The following is a great press release example. It has a sales aspect to it (something you typically want), it’s on a topic that’s worthy of being written about, it reads like an actual article (another key attribute), and it’s got some good quotes in it as well.
WASHINGTON – The Office of the Director of Science and Technology (DS&T) within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI)—in partnership with the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence (OUSD[I])— announced today the winners of its first public challenge contest, “Xpress,” to explore artificial intelligence (AI) approaches with the potential to transform the process by which analysts currently support policymakers and warfighters through the research and generation of written products.
The ideal length of a press release is about an A4 side or about 300 to 400 words (the length of a short news item). That’s just three or four short paragraphs and a couple of of quotes. If yours is longer than that, you’ve probably got unnecessary waffle that doesn’t add anything to your story.
Write the second paragraph of the body. This area should provide more details about the key benefits of the product and needs it fulfills identified in Step 4. This area is the ‘bulk’ of the press release and can be up to five sentences long.

Be personal. At the very least, customize your email with a specific person’s name instead of mass mailing a press release to several people using To Whom It May Concern. Once you have created your media list, look them up on social media or Google them to see what they have written lately. If you show how your press release is relevant to, or maybe of interest to them due to their previous story, they are more likely to cover you.
5. The boilerplate statement follows the body. The boilerplate is a chunk of text that can be used repeatedly, just as an About page is used on a website. This is where the details about your company are listed including; the services you provide, and perhaps names the key executives as well. It can contain your mission and vision for your company. This is the public persona you wish to project for your company.
Whether you are on a tight budget and are looking for the best free press release services or are more interested in getting the largest distribution you can from one of the paid press release distribution services, these six companies should offer you some great options for your PR, along with other business needs.
“A boilerplate is usually found at the end of a press release, and briefly describes the company or organization related above. The short paragraph consisting of just a few sentences concisely explains the company or organization.”
