what makes a good press release digital press release example

Firstly, we located all the free active PR distribution sites that we could find and then issued a series of press releases on each site. To make this a realistic test we used ‘real’ press releases containing news about our PR agency or client news. In total, we issued four releases using the sites (two releases about clients and two about Vitis PR). Each time we issued a release, we reviewed the results, only including the sites that we felt performed well in subsequent tests. The table below shows how many releases were issued in each ’round’:
Ideally, you want your press release to land in the recipient’s primary inbox. This is why you should not send bulk emails to hundreds of contacts. Using Mailchimp or another newsletter service will usually get your email categorized as a promotion, not primary inbox material. Even individual emails can end up in the spam folder if the sender’s email / domain is blacklisted. Check yours here:
The first paragraph should sum up your story in about 50-100 words. You don’t have very much time to get to the point so make every word count. Avoid including boring self-promotion and focus instead on the 5 W’s: Who, What, Where, When and Why. These questions will get to the point of your story in no time.
WASHINGTON — On Friday, Free Press voluntarily withdrew its “petition for review,” filed in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit to challenge the FCC’s repeal of the Net Neutrality protections. Free Press still plans to sue the FCC to overturn its decision.
This is why the easiest, most organic way to thoroughly cover the who/what/when/where/why (+why anyone should care) is still a press release, even if that press release takes the form of a blog post. Anything else is a just an inconvenient patchwork of email strings, phone calls and DropBox links.
Your business networking groups – If you have been attending local business networking groups, chances are some of the members work in the local PR scene. If not, ask some of your group members if they know of any PR agents.
We recommend eReleases as the best press release distribution service for small businesses because they offer the widest distribution for the price. Where some competitors focus primarily on web exposure, eReleases aims to get your story in the hands of qualified journalists. Their service includes distribution through The Associated Press, the PR Newswire network, and their own network of websites and journalists.
We recommend eReleases as the best press release distribution service for small businesses because they offer the widest potential distribution for a competitive price. While PR Web distributes your press releases to more websites, eReleases is the only service we reviewed that distributes to the Associated Press’ wire.
Make sure your press release reads well; concentrate on improving relevance and usefulness of the content. Most importantly, though, it should be short. A long press release will be hard to read, even if it is interesting, the reader is likely to stop reading at a certain point. So, make it short – it’s as simple as that.
PR Newswire:  The PR Newswire iReach service does not include wire distribution. In order to have the ability to distribute your press release via the newswire network, you must be a member ($195/year).PR Newswire is the only service we reviewed to broadcast the image from your press release in Times Square. This unique feature isn’t likely to generate the same kind of media attention or online exposure that submitting your press release to newswires will, but you could capture an image of the broadcast for use in future promotional materials.
Heading: This needs to be strong. People are interested in how a business expands, who it sells to, and how much money it makes. Craft your headline with a strong title that grabs a reader’s attention right away.
Not all press releases contain a release date, but if you decide to include one, put it at below your logo on the left margin. This should either say “FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE”, or “FOR RELEASE ON [date] AT [time]”.
Nice list but very expensive options for the paid sites. I have used a guy on Fiverr who submitted to some premium press release and news sites at a fraction of the cost and the results were good – http://fiverr.com/datwriterguy.
Wow, I can’t believe that counts as a mention. Some of this pay PR sites promise 200+ mentions, but being on some random page of a 10,000 page radio website is completely worthless in terms of traffic; maybe there is some SEO benefit?
7.  Create a document that keeps track of everywhere you posted your press release, and all of the sites who wrote about your freemium. Create an ongoing press list from this so that you can focus your efforts more effectively the next time.
Offer details here that strengthen your narrative, like creative or noteworthy ways your company developed the project or announcement at hand. Or, when applicable, comment on future implications of your announcement.
For some, the purpose of creating a free press release is in line with creating a commercial or a newspaper advertisement. Of course, the catch is that this is not always available within free PR services, and can be costly for new businesses or service providers.
Centered at the top of your page should be the band’s name and the album name. To make sure this information draws attention, make sure you use a larger text size than the rest of your release, and also use bold and/or italics. You can also set this information apart by putting it in a box. If the album is on a label, include the label name and/or catalog number here as well.
The point of an evergreen release is to provide useful and interesting information that is, and will remain, relevant to your target audience. These releases give brands a chance to stretch their storytelling muscles. Be natural and focus on writing well in your evergreen release.
The old standard is that a release should be similar to a story the journalist would write. Reporters often stick to a structure known as the inverted pyramid, which means the most significant parts or the story should be at the top, with everything getting less important as you go farther down the page. This ensures that even someone who just reads the top of the release will get the most important information, and makes it easier to cut text from the bottom for space.
As a reporter, my immediate response to that press release was that it’s not important because it expended an entire sentence saying absolutely nothing. And I assumed (probably rightly) that the company’s marketing team was a bunch of idiots.
This is one of the best graphics I’ve seen describing the correct formula for a press release. However, you forgot one thing. Just above the Headline you forgot to write the words: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (in call caps). If I may please ask you to revise your graphic, you would help a lot new writers to learn the true formula of an Associated Press press release standard. Thanks again for your well designed and informative graphic.
Given that none of the releases was picked up by any site that might be considered to be the source of a valuable link, it seems that there is little value in using these services for link building. However, some of the sites do provide links and a few allow you to tailor the anchor text. (If you’re not familiar with ‘dofollow’ or ‘nofollow’ links, a good rule of thumb is that the ‘dofollow’ or ‘followed’ links are the kind that usually give some SEO benefit and ‘nofollow’ links generally don’t.) Most sites either didn’t give a link or gave a ‘nofollow’ link.
Twitter is a good place to start. Find writers who cover similar productions to yours. If it’s a sci-fi, find the sci-fi enthusiasts. Get to know the content producers. Read / watch their material. Share their material on social media (it goes both ways!). Essentially, you should build relationships with people who have extensive (real) online reach. Check out the Twitter lists on the bottom of this page.

In the earlier days of search engines, having your press release link to your business’ website — and, therefore, on the websites that published your press release — would help to improve your website’s search engine ranking. However, as search engine’s algorithms have become more sophisticated they’ve begun to penalize websites that try to take advantage of this system.
that depends on which media you are targeting, if you’re targeting media with an audience who will know the author then that should feature in your pitch. When you target media with a younger audience you’ll need to find an angle that they can relate to.
However, if you’re approaching someone who blogs or vlogs in the spare time, this rule may not apply. Follow them on social media, find out when they’re active (consider that they may be using Hootsuite or similar to schedule posts) and try to approach them when they are online. This way, you’ll be ready to answer any questions immediately.
