As you write your press release, put yourself in the reader’s shoes. Try to visualize what would catch his or her attention, and what would be compelling or entertaining enough to make them want to keep reading.
Event:  outline the who, what, when, where and why of an event with the goal that the media will talk about it and/or attend themselves.  Example headline:  “ABC Company’s Annual Golf Tournament for Local Schools to Take Place on Friday, June 7.”
In the traditional distribution model, the business, political campaign, or other entity releasing information to the media hires a publicity agency to write and distribute written information to the newswires.[6] The newswire then disseminates the information as it is received or as investigated by a journalist.
The first paragraph of your release should cover the who, what, why, where, and how of your new launch, update, or development. Reporters don’t have a ton of time to sift through details and fluffy background information — they just need the facts that’ll help them tell your story to someone else from a position of authority.

There are a couple of reasons why mass pitching is a horrible idea. For one, it’s likely to land your message in Gmail’s Promotions tab instead of in the actual inbox of the person you’re reaching out to. Paying for news distribution is valued by corporations and usually proves to be beneficial. Corporate clients like to see lots of pick-up coverage and paid news distribution scores with the full court press time and time again. However, if you are doing a news release regarding a court proceeding, a number of the paid news outlets will not print your news release. Also, when you are promoting entertainment – shows, performances, events – you want to focus on your core audience. Those same fancy PR tools I mentioned earlier enable PR pros to mass-email your release to as many journalists as they want. This is a terrible feature and PR reps as a whole will get a much better reputation if it ever goes away. There are even “coverage wizard” options that will auto-pull lists of journalists, editors and producers for you based on a specific beat. While this can be a good starting point, it’s important to A) research each person before you reach to them, and B) never mass pitch everyone at once (in case I haven’t made that clear enough yet).
Of all the press release distribution services covered here, perhaps the one that is most unlike all the others is HARO (Help a Reporter Out). The service launched as a way to connect journalists with relevant sources. The basic idea here is that journalists are often working under tight deadlines, and may be having a hard time finding a key source or expert who can comment on the story. Using HARO, this journalist would gain access to some of the top sources out there.
Expert positioning:  showcase a company or organization’s individuals as go-to experts for the media.  Or focus on a report, statistics or results to show expertise of the company as a whole on certain topics or industry trends.  Example headline:  “ABC Company’s Vice President of Operations, Abby Brown, Talks Logistics within the Ever-Changing Software World.”
But it should also contain enough concise information that if no one reads further, the opening paragraph could stand on its own. Typically, the opening paragraph offers information about who, what, where, when, why, or how.
There’s no broad answer to that, it depends entirely on your book, the media that you are targeting and quite a few other factors. You need to offer the media something that will help them entertain or inform their audience, so look for the overlap with your book.
