While it can be a useful background document for journalists, a press release isn’t a story. If you want to maximise your chances of getting press coverage, you will have to tweak your idea, and your release, for different publications or programmes. You can find more information about how to find journalists’ contacts details in this article.
Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital media revolution with its iPod portable music and video players and iTunes online store, and has entered the mobile phone market with its revolutionary iPhone.
If it were easy to write a press release, there would be no need for press release writing services, press release writing articles, books, and newsletters. Press release writing is definitely not easy.
However, if you’re approaching someone who blogs or vlogs in the spare time, this rule may not apply. Follow them on social media, find out when they’re active (consider that they may be using Hootsuite or similar to schedule posts) and try to approach them when they are online. This way, you’ll be ready to answer any questions immediately.
To be honest, a lot of this boils down to a matter of luck. Newsrooms are chaotic and distracting places – and so even the most intriguing press release on earth might slip through the cracks if it’s sent to the wrong reporter at the wrong time of day. But if you follow the aforementioned writing tips, you should emerge with a fairly ironclad press release that will almost definitely get published somewhere.
Follow-up by phone or email. Once you’ve sent your press release out to your local media outlets, follow-up with a phone call or email. This personal touch can help cement your press release on a journalist’s radar and make it easier for them to remember.
That means your release needs a good headline. That can be something saying how your new product is going to make life easier, or how it relates to a news event. Your headline should be an attention-grabber, so reporters can see right away how the announcement affects their audience.
Tell them where they’ve heard of you but make it brief (and don’t write you may have heard of us). If you need a more formal introduction, include your band bio separately, and only if requested by the recipient of your first press release.
I’ll be honest in that I have very little experience in using free sites. My PR agency for high-tech clients has always used a paid service. However, that costs upwards of $500 per release, and now that I am helping entrepreneurs and small businesses get PR, I am asked this question all the time:
This is a little obvious, but you need something newsworthy to issue a press release, otherwise who cares? Have a look at Canadian ecommerce company Well.ca and their impressive list of awards for which they’ve garnered significant media attention:
As a reporter, my immediate response to that press release was that it’s not important because it expended an entire sentence saying absolutely nothing. And I assumed (probably rightly) that the company’s marketing team was a bunch of idiots.
Press releases should always be short and to the point. No one has time to read a three-page document on the history of your organization and why this new update to your product is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
One tool, but certainly not the only one, is a press release. Keep in mind that most entertainment and music writers, even those in mid-sized markets are inundated with press releases on an hourly basis, so the window of opportunity here is very small.
In the United States, the judgment in Inter Publishing v. Associated Press facilitated competition by requiring agencies to accept all newspapers wishing to join. As a result of the increasing newspapers, the Associated Press was now challenged by the creation of United Press Associations in 1907 and International News Service by newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst in 1909. Driven by the huge U.S. domestic market, boosted by the runaway success of radio, all three major agencies required the dismantling of the cartel agencies through the Agreement of 26 August 1927. They were concerned about the success of U.S. agencies from other European countries which sought to create national agencies after the First World War. Reuters had been weakened by war censorship, which promoted the creation of newspaper cooperatives in the Commonwealth and national agencies in Asia, two of its strong areas. After the Second World War, the movement for the creation of national agencies accelerated, when accessing the independence of former colonies, the national agencies were operated by the State. Reuters, became cooperative, managed a breakthrough in finance, and helped to reduce the number of U.S. agencies from three to one, along with the internationalization of the Spanish EFE and the globalization of Agence France-Presse.
To get a feel for which sites might be best for links, we could use how highly each press release page ranks in search results as a rough indicator of how much link juice that page might be able to pass. When one of our releases appeared on page one of Google web search (and the free release site provided a link) we rated that site highly for link building (note, this is a very simplistic approach, but good enough to get a feel for the sites; a more detailed analysis might give slightly different results).
In this paragraph, briefly expand a little bit about the band and the music on the album. This paragraph is very important for a new band with a debut album. Don’t mistake this for a band bio – which should be separate – but include some info about where the band comes from, influences, and again, any big ticket selling points. Keep this paragraph brief.
• Major milestones – Are you the first to do something substantial? Did you just hit your 100,000th user? Have you sold 1 million gallons/dollars/units of your widgets? These can all be pitchable moments.
Write it down. Take notes as the person answers your questions — you want to be sure to quote the person accurately in your story. It’s OK to ask the person to repeat what they said or ask them what they mean if you don’t understand them the first time. The main thing is to get it right.
This is the place where you can write (briefly) about your company. You can put your company’s merits and achievements here, but don’t make it too long, since this will put you at risk of sounding like you’re hard-selling your company.
Pressat provides a cost-effective press release distribution service for businesses looking to spread news to media outlets and channels across the United Kingdom and internationally in order to gain press coverage.
These are tough times. Help make them easier for a child at risk: report suspected child abuse and support those organizations in your community that put children first. Child abuse prevention is everyone’s job.
I find the opposite to be true. PR people are dinosaurs. Paying people to try to get you free advertising for more than the actual advertising would cost. Well placed ads are more effective. I run a popular local interest web site and get PR people all the time trying to get a blurb printed; for the cost of those people they could get prime placed advertising for a year. Another problem is that nobody reads traditional media anymore; in the old days you were paying for relationships between PR people and publications. Now those relationships aren’t much become few people read the publications. And there are so many more publications, if you do get placement only a tiny fraction of people read it.

“Free” is one of the most persuasive words in the English language and makes this press release title eye-catching. Also included in the press release is a link to the free practice test. This gives the reader immediate information without requiring back and forth emailing or other inconvenient actions.
