As you are not writing to your target audience directly, you need to write your press release in the third person. So “ABC Ltd has signed a £5 million deal with XYZ Ltd” not “We’ve signed a deal with…”
Event:  outline the who, what, when, where and why of an event with the goal that the media will talk it and/or attend themselves.  Example headline:  “ABC Company’s Annual Golf Tournament for Local Schools to Take Place on Friday, June 7.”

To be fair, we did expect this result, it is rare enough for someone to pick up news from some of the premium paid-for news wires and given the volume of free press releases being pumped out these days we would have been (pleasantly) surprised to find any pick up of our releases. Ideally, quotes will be from key stakeholders in your company including your executive team, project leads, or those directly impacted by your announcement. Quoting key figures and authorities underlines the importance of your development. The chosen quote should shape your narrative and emphasize the core of the announcement. Don’t ask everyone in your office for a comment or feel compelled to quote all 25 people included in the acquisition — pick one or two critical spokespeople and focus the quotes around their unique perspective. 
There’s no broad answer to that, it depends entirely on your book, the media that you are targeting and quite a few other factors. You need to offer the media something that will help them entertain or inform their audience, so look for the overlap with your book.
Here’s a tip that I just recently found out, there are a few sites that resell prnewswire’s products. The one’s that I have tried are Press Release Distribution to Major News & Media Outlets and www.onlineprnewscom . I’ve heard about ereleases too but haven’t tried them yet.
While content, like blogs, may allow for plenty of creativity in style and structure, the same isn’t true when writing a press release. Paid and free press releases all should follow a set format which includes the headline, intro, essentials of the story, quotes, and then a brief ending.
