This is why the easiest, most organic way to thoroughly cover the who/what/when/where/why (+why anyone should care) is still a press release, even if that press release takes the form of a blog post. Anything else is a just an inconvenient patchwork of email strings, phone calls and DropBox links.
Recently, Globe Newswire has upped its game by getting more heavily involved in reaching social media influencers and providing more in-depth analytics related to social media. If you’re releasing company information across the Internet, you want to know how it’s performing and who’s writing about it, and that’s the goal of Globe Newswire’s advanced analytics offerings.
However, if you’re approaching someone who blogs or vlogs in the spare time, this rule may not apply. Follow them on social media, find out when they’re active (consider that they may be using Hootsuite or similar to schedule posts) and try to approach them when they are online. This way, you’ll be ready to answer any questions immediately.
And television stations are a different story entirely. If you’re trying to get air time for an event, send out your press release to your local TV stations at least two days beforehand. Since news varies from day-to-day, a car crash can prevent stations from covering your event. But your chances are even lower if they receive your press release the same day.
The following is a great press release example. It has a sales aspect to it (something you typically want), it’s on a topic that’s worthy of being written about, it reads like an actual article (another key attribute), and it’s got some good quotes in it as well.

I drafted this press release on the first-ever senior friendly TV put out by TV EARS. The timing was ideal since it was leading up to the Consumer Electronic Show (CES). This release was published on numerous sites and also resulted in feature stories and live interviews at CES with national media outlets. There are a few tips from this particular release.
PRLog does not publish immediately, usually takes a couple days. They have published every release I’ve submitted – knock on wood -and have always sent a follow-up email notifying me that my release is live.
You have listed Newswire.com under your list of free press release websites. This appears to be incorrect as it is free to sign up but they want a minimum of $99 for a press release. Please can you check and review this page as I have just wasted 30 minutes and I am sure others must have had the same experience.
Why Many [Not-so-Smart] Digital Marketers Malign Press Releases & PR – […] distribution websites may seem like an easy public relations tactic, PR and SEO experts generally recommend avoiding them or…
The idea behind this press release and why it’s effective is it was written to promote our commitment to creating products that use natural ingredients while showing our support for reputable non-profit organizations, like The Arbor Day Foundation, that give back to the community and help our planet. This press release reinforces our commitment to being green, shows philanthropic support, and creates good will with our new and existing customers.
Wow. This is a powerful resource. I read and re-read and then made points and downloaded the copy for future use. Simply put this is a very well written article about Press Releases and has given me a lot of ideas. Thank you!
Title. Concisely describe what the release is about. For SEO, try to use a client keyword phrase in the title, preferably at the beginning and in place of the business name. “Sunshine Coast IVF” is one of our target keywords. I could have optimized this title further by putting our keyword first with a title like, “Sunshine Coast IVF Clinic Announces Opening Of New Clinic In Buderim.”
The last step in writing a press release is to write the phone number(s), fax, email, website addresses and other links for social media platforms where the business is active. In addition to this, you can also write about your business partners and potential clients in this section. Make sure you conclude the press release with a call to action.
• Unique statistics – if you’ve got enough customers or a big enough user base to poll and get statistically significant numbers, you can use the data to generate earned media coverage for your company. Reporters love fresh, compelling, unique stats for their articles, and if you can give it to them you’ll find those numbers being cited and re-cited all over the internet (often with links back to your website).
If you were going to write a press release about your new product, it needs to be newsworthy. In other words, nobody wants to read a press release that just says, “Hey, we made a thing!” Instead, arrange your press release so that it includes the most unique benefits of your new product.
America’s teenagers are angry at Hollywood for glamorizing ultra-thin bodies, and many girls say they feel too self-conscious about their bodies as a result of watching TV, movies and music videos. The findings are gleaned from more than six months of ongoing discussion and debate at the website theplace4vitamins.com. According to theplace4vitamins.com President John Smith, anger and resentment toward the Hollywood ultra-thin runs deep, particularly among teenage girls.

My Rating: I compute the above statistics and rate each site based on its credibility, traffic, popularity and the quality of results that it yields in the end (after the website distributes your press release).
FIRST PARAGRAPH: This 3-4 sentence paragraph should include who (the authors), what (the main finding), when (journal and date of publication), and why (relevance). Again, use the active voice and avoid scientific jargon. The first paragraph should be a stand-alone snapshot of the research.
If you’re writing your press release correctly, it should read as though it’s a news article itself. There should be quotes that can be pulled out of context and still convey the right message, from both the company and a customer/user/other person getting benefit from the news you’re announcing. Often, reporters will copy/paste these quotes into their coverage – or even copy/paste entire sections of your release (you’d be surprised how many major media outlets do this).
RULE #5: Contact your top outlets personally. In addition to sending a press release, personally contact the reporters that you really want to cover the story. Send them something personal. You might even want to rewrite the press release to fit their beat.
Hi Makori, thanks for the comment and great question. The headline and the first sentence are both incredibly important and should both be treated as grabbers. I would argue that the headline is the most important element though because it is often the element that gets people to click and read the press release.
Finally, when you mass pitch reporters…the reporters know. You’re not fooling anyone by customizing the name in the greeting line for each recipient. And reporters like to feel special, like they’re the only one you’re pitching your news to.
WASHINGTON — In a full-page ad placed in major U.S. newspapers on Wednesday, AT&T called on Congress to pass an “Internet Bill of Rights” that would apply to phone and cable companies as well as technology platforms.
In the United States, the judgment in Inter Ocean Publishing v. Associated Press facilitated competition by requiring agencies to accept all newspapers wishing to join. As a result of the increasing newspapers, the Associated Press was now challenged by the creation of United Press Associations in 1907 and International News Service by newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst in 1909. Driven by the huge U.S. domestic market, boosted by the runaway success of radio, all three major agencies required the dismantling of the cartel agencies through the Agreement of 26 August 1927. They were concerned about the success U.S. agencies from other European countries which sought to create national agencies after the First World War. Reuters had been weakened by war censorship, which promoted the creation of newspaper cooperatives in the Commonwealth and national agencies in Asia, two of its strong areas. After the Second World War, the movement for the creation of national agencies accelerated, when accessing the independence of former colonies, the national agencies were operated by the State. Reuters, became cooperative, managed a breakthrough in finance, and helped to reduce the number of U.S. agencies from three to one, along with the internationalization of the Spanish EFE and the globalization of Agence France-Presse.
I’m not sure which publications you’re talking about – local news has certainly been struggling in recent years, but several online publications have really taken off. That seems like a blanket statement that certainly isn’t true for all media outlets.
Always include a quote—–ideally from the lead individual involved in the subject matter of the release. The text need not be an actual quote but it should be plausible. Either way, it is essential to check that the person being quoted is happy with it. A quote allows a busy journalist to prepare a complete article without doing a follow-up interview.
