Once you’ve submitted your order, your registration and press release will be checked for content acceptability.  iReach and PR Newswire maintain their reputations as credible news delivery services by adhering to acceptable content guidelines.
That means your release needs a good headline. That can be something saying how your new product is going to make life easier, or how it relates to a news event. Your headline should be an attention-grabber, so reporters can see right away how the announcement affects their audience.
Press release terms have you boggled?  Need more help?  Here are a few sites beyond the obvious to help you learn more (or services to hire).  In no way am I advocating hiring someone to do press releases for you, but the rule remains for an entrepreneur:  Learn to do it or hire someone to do it for you.
The last step in writing a press release is to write the phone number(s), fax, email, website addresses and other links for social media platforms where the business is active. In addition to this, you can also write about your business partners and potential clients in this section. Make sure you conclude the press release with a call to action.
“There aren’t really a prescriptive number of pages or word count.” If I may add one important aspect from journalism school 101: any article for a newspaper (and a press release ideally ends up as an article “as if” the journalist had written it him/herself) needs to be structured in such a way, that you can clip from the end (!!!) without it losing stringency and closure. That is entirely different from creative writing. “A Winter’s tale” or an Agatha Christie whodunit would lose much, if not all, of its charm if you left out the last, say, two, paragraphs! But since (in the olden days) a piece of journalism needed to fit in with the rest of the layout (including advertising and late breaking news), whoever redacted a piece had to be able to cut off bits and pieces at the end without having to read, let alone reformulate the rest of the article. That said, this rule still stands today though space is not always a bottleneck in the digital world (but – you never know, maybe your press release even makes it into the print version!). So train yourself to write like a (good) journalist. If you don’t you could wonder for years what made your press releases fall by the wayside time and again.
Every element of your message needs to drive to your objective, e.g. driving traffic to a web site, getting people to register, or inspiring media coverage. Keep this in mind as you develop your message.
I have used http://responsivepr.com – very good service. They not only publish press releases they distribute them to their own social network accounts: Ywitter and Pinterest. I have been very impressed by them. Costs £6.95 but I have receive excellent service.
Hi Emmy, Thanks a lot for this template. I’m working on a press release for my mobile app. After going through examples of other press releases, I noticed that a lot of grabers stem from the headline. How much more important would that be? Thanks, Makori.
What follows are three examples, pretty much picked randomly, which show how it’s done. The first two have a little biz-blab in them, but are still reasonably effective. third one (from Microsoft) is an excellent example of how to write a press release that will intrigue reporters and editors.
The new Chinese line of phones features localized Chinese apps and charts of the most sought-after paid and free apps available in China. Most journalists use search engines like Google and Yahoo! News to research their stories. This is partially because they can search for specific information, so they are able to have more targeted control over the information that they find. This helps to separate the signal from the noise, reducing their overall research time. Therefore, it’s a good idea to have your press release listed on these search engines.
First, plan on using an email address on an actual domain. A few sites don’t allow free email addresses (like Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail), so it’s good practice to use a standard email address for every site. I use “info@mikemunter.com” for all my press release testing and submissions.
