Make it clean, crisp, and applicable to your audience. Odds are whoever you sent your press release to has a dozen just like it in his/her inbox just waiting to be ignored. If you want yours to be chosen, it’s got to be good. Not only does it have to be good, but it has to be as close to ready press as possible.
A note about press releases being accepted for ‘publication’ by the sites: we have (as you might expect) a lot of experience writing press releases that meet the rules laid down by various news wire services (e.g. don’t make claims about being the ‘best’ something unless you can prove it). That said, I may take your suggestion a bit further. Instead of saying FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, I may put something like FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE or EMBARGOED UNTIL [INSERT DATE] so developers know where to put the for immediate release or embargo date 🙂
