press release writing exercise press release format

A press release can be used to announce a new or updated product. Other press release topics can include a partnership with a company or organization, as well as being issued an industry award. For additional press release topics, visit: http://www.ereleases.com/prfuel/press-release-topic-ideas/. As you just saw, you may include a url in your press release.
Ideally, quotes will be from key stakeholders in your company including your executive team, project leads, or those directly impacted by your announcement. Quoting key figures and authorities underlines the importance of your development. The chosen quote should shape your narrative and emphasize the core of the announcement. Don’t ask everyone in your office for a comment or feel compelled to quote all 25 people included in the acquisition — pick one or two critical spokespeople and focus the quotes around their unique perspective.
Ensure Your Kickstarter Has Everything Writers Want to See Because many games-to-be promoted on Kickstarter have not come to fruition with what they promised, writers are cautious about which Kickstarters they cover. To increase your chances of coverage, you must now, more than ever, show proof of progress and the ability to deliver. This of course includes an excellent video and other page assets, but many writers want to see a playable demo. (On your Kickstarter page, you reference a playable pre-alpha. Any chance you could derive a playable demo from something like that and make it available to the Kickstarter audience/press? It may help).
Yves Rochard, president of CNMW had this to say, “We are delighted with our partnership with Laser Shooting Robots and look forward to introducing their product to the European market. There is a synergy between our two brands that we feel will result in a profitable relationship for both of us. We have already integrated their sales tools into our website and will begin manufacturing, and shipping Laser Shooting Robots as of February 2012.”

This press release is indexed by Google as indicated by the live snippet. Since Google has crawled this web page, the dofollow link in the release is slightly boosting the authority of the page it is pointing to, helping it to rank a bit better in Google.
Write it down. Take notes as the person answers your questions — you want to be sure to quote the person accurately in your story. It’s OK to ask the person to repeat what they said or ask them what they mean if you don’t understand them the first time. The main thing is to get it right.
You also want to make sure the press release is newsworthy. This doesn’t mean that you can only send out a press release for information that would make the front page of the New York Times. It does mean that you have to find an angle that you think journalists will find interesting and want to write about.
While there are some positive press releases used to promote positive events such as extension plans or product releases, some occasions ask a brand to come up with a defensive one. Since positive press releases can be threatening to some, they can publish some negative news in retaliation. When it comes to writing a defensive press release, these can be a sharpest weapon to protect and defend a company from bad publicity.
The last step in writing a press release is to write the phone number(s), fax, email, website addresses and other links for social media platforms where the business is active. In addition to this, you can also write about your business partners and potential clients in this section. Make sure you conclude the press release with a call to action.
To get a feel for which sites might be best for links, we could use how highly each press release page ranks in search results as a rough indicator of how much link juice that page might be able to pass. When one of our releases appeared on page one of Google web search (and the free release site provided a link) we rated that site highly for link building (note, this is a very simplistic approach, but good enough to get a feel for the sites; a more detailed analysis might give slightly different results).
Deal with actual facts –– events, products, services, people, targets, goals, plans, projects. Try to provide maximum use of concrete facts. This is news. A simple method for writing an effective press release is to make a list of following clarifications: Who, what, when, where, why, and how.
All press must include a headline, sub-heading and a notes to editors section listing the contact information of the academics mentioned. The number of paragraphs will vary according to the newsworthiness of the story, however, the introduction must always answer the five Ws and a quotation is always needed. It is good practice to limit press releases to approximately 300-350 words, featuring the key information presented with an angle in mind.
We recently used PR Newswire’s services to announce our newly hired Director of Development. Our release was picked up by over 100 online publications. Their services and website are user-friendly, and we were truly impressed by the results. It was definitely worth the investment!
If your press release has gone onto a second page, you’ve probably got two or more stories. (Or you’ve padded it out with irrelevant, self-congratulatory quotes from ‘important’ people you’ve been told have to be included.)
List your tour dates but limit the list to no more than five or six upcoming dates. Indicate that the full list of tour dates is available on your band’s website. Include the website address, as well as any social media channels you or the band uses to promote your work. If there is anything special about any of the shows, for instance, if a show is an afternoon gig or if the show is 18+ only, include that information.
Well, for starters, a press release has several names; a press statement, media release or a news release. No matter what we call it, the purpose and identity of it remains the same. It is basically an officially recorded and written announcement which is issued by an organization for the target audience. To be exact, it is a compelling and short news story where the ultimate goal is to pique the interest of the target audience by containing all the information about an event (what, why, who, when, where, and how).
I not sure if it’s still worth placing PR on Market Wire and PR Web. Looking the organic traffic data, it seems that these PR sites as well as most of the PR sites out there were heavily penalized by Google’s recent algorithm updates. It’s not worth the money although you may reach a large audience because of their distribution services.
There’s a reason that the value of earned media coverage is calculated at 3x ad rate: people tend to believe media outlets more than the advertisers. Think about it – if you saw an ad that said “This miracle drug does XYZ,” would you believe that more than if the same words were spoken by an expert and reported by a news outlet? You’d probably be more influenced by the latter. This is why influencers and brand ambassadors are so important these days.
A press release should consist of three to six paragraphs where you provide all the relevant facts and information a reporter should use to write a story. The most important information should be listed first, with the least important information appearing in the final paragraph. Each paragraph should consist of three to six sentences written in the third person. You should maintain an objective tone and avoid hype. The average press release consists of 500 words or less. This press release template consists of xxx words.
“A great press release should include a great quote from a company executive or industry expert,” says eReleases President Mickie Kennedy. “An important thing to know about quotes is that the media generally won’t use them unless they are evocative, fresh or state something in a way that would be very difficult to paraphrase. To ensure your quote finds a home in a story based on your announcement, avoid cliches or generalizations.” More info at “You Can Quote Me On That!”
TV news viewers can often detect the use of VNRs within television newscasts; for example, many movie-star interviews are actually VNRs, taped on a set which is located at the movie studio and decorated with the movie’s logo. Another frequent example of VNRs masquerading as news footage is videotapes of particular medical breakthroughs, that are really produced and distributed by pharmaceutical companies for the purpose of selling new medicines.
Proximity: As a small business, this one should be easy to understand — proximity matters. For many small businesses or nonprofits, your news will likely matter more to local publications than to national ones, or publications that focus on other regions.
If you’re relying on a free press release distribution service to get your news in front of journalists and bloggers, the odds are that it isn’t going to work except perhaps in a few special cases. If you really must use a wire service, you’d be better served with a premium service. Having said all that, one of the best ways to get journalists interested in your news is traditional PR media relations – find the right journalist, get your story straight and pitch it. We’ve got a series of how-to’s and guides on writing press releases and pitching to the press in our articles on effective press releases.
One thing comes to the mind of any good journalist when they receive a press release: Why would I care? The news in your news release has to be obvious, or else your notice will be on a fast route to the recycle bin.  The first step is figuring out exactly what message you are trying to get across, and how it qualifies as news.
These days you want a press release to generate more than a sudden spurt of publicity. After your press release has been distributed, you want your press release to keep working for you by building quality backlinks to your website. The more backlinks generated from a PageRank 4-7 website, the more frequent you will see your website’s position rise in search engine results. A higher position in Google or Bing! search engine results will increase traffic to your website every day. This translates to long-term publicity and success!
Ideally, you want your press release to land in the recipient’s primary inbox. This is why you should not send bulk emails to hundreds of contacts. Using Mailchimp or another newsletter service will usually get your email categorized as a promotion, not primary inbox material. Even individual emails can end up in the spam folder if the sender’s email / domain is blacklisted. Check yours here:
• Newsjacking – Is there a something going on in the news that you have a unique angle or an educated perspective on? A potential solution to a problem? Newsjacking could be your best bet. This requires you to act fast, but can pay off big time.
If you’re starting an online retail business that is truly remarkable, a good press release can be all the spark you need to blast your business into outer space, where you won’t find martians, but could potentially get that first sale (and many more) you’re thirsting for. This is why we keep reiterating that you should focus on being different, newsworthy and exceptional from your competition, that is the key “secret sauce” in all of these strategies and tactics.
Take advantage of the opportunity with this list of free press release websites and distribution services at least once a month on the internet.  Some might view a press release as marketing while others view it as education or information.  Regardless, if you do something worth shouting about in your business, then do so!  Press releases keep the world informed and possibly…improve the chances of getting found.
Don’t’ forget that media organizations run on tight deadlines. Pommerehn says the morning is typically the best time to send a release for most publications while late morning or early afternoon is better for television and radio outlets.
