This is a little obvious, but you need something newsworthy to issue a press release, otherwise who cares? Have a look at Canadian ecommerce company Well.ca and their impressive list of awards for which they’ve garnered significant media attention:

Although targeting is important and you should research every reporter you pitch, at the end of the day pitching is largely a numbers game. 4. Body. The body of the press release is where you really get to tell the story of the event. This portion of the release will usually have two or three paragraphs. Use the first paragraph to elaborate on the details of the event. Talk about the target audience, any guests who will be featured and their background, and the benefits of attending. If the venue is historic or ties in with your event in some way or the date coincides with history or a special anniversary with your company, mention this. This part of the press release can be a bit more descriptive than previous sections.
Include a call to action in your release. This is information on what you want the public to do with the information that you are releasing. For example, do you want readers to buy a product? If so, include information on where the product is available. Do you want readers to visit your website to enter a contest or learn more about your organization? If so, include the website address or a phone number.
Avoid hyperbole or cliche here. You want to convey solidly what your book is about and what it contains. Try and make the language punchy and descriptive. It should be easily understandable without being too dry and generic.
There are still many benefits, as Daryl Willcox, chairman of DWPub, told eConsultancy. He explained that “social media pick-up” and “direct to consumer communications” function well “as part of a concerted, long-term PR or content marketing campaign.” Press releases will always have a place in certain complex industries — like finance and biomedical tech.
Use a hook. Tying your event into trends, news, and social issues can add excitement and urgency to a press release for an event. The reader feels they are getting more value by attending than staying away.
The first paragraph (two to three sentences) should sum up the press release, and the additional content must elaborate it. In a fast-paced world, neither journalists, nor other readers, would read the entire press release if the start of the article didn’t generate interest.

Send your release by email, and use formatting sparingly. Giant type and multiple colors enhance your news, they distract from it. Put the release in the body of the email, not as an attachment. If you must use an attachment, make it a plain text or Rich Text Format file. Word documents are acceptable at most outlets, but if you are using the newest version (.docx), save down a version (.doc). Newspapers especially, are on tight budgets now, and many have not upgraded. Use PDF files only if you are sending a full media kit with lots of graphics. Don’t type a release on letterhead, then scan it and email a jpeg of the scan––that’s a waste of your time and the editor’s. Just type the release straight into the email message.
Other so called Top 10 lists or Best of the Best lists that you may encounter on other websites only consider two factors: 1) is the service free?; and 2) how much publicity does it generate for me? By making them simple to read, with simple formatting and expected places for dates, times, headlines and so forth, you make the journalist’s job much easier. And when you make their lives easier, you are more likely to get coverage in the newspaper, magazine, website, or news broadcast. . 
In the next two or three paragraphs you can add more detail to substantiate your headline and introduction. Remember, your headline promised the reader that it would be worthwhile to read your release so now is your chance to keep your promise.
You might be able to rank a press release in Google for a non-competitive term, but in general, I don’t expect it. Nor do I expect to receive any referral traffic. If either of these things happens, I consider it a bonus.
Search Engine Optimization. Most press release sites are designed to allow you to optimize your press release for search engines using tags, anchor text links, header tags, etc. If you’re not sure, look on the PR website for a statement about press releases being optimized for search engines (SEO).
