When I asked her when the last time she went through the releases that get sent to her via the press release distribution services, and then actually covered one of them, her response was telling:

If you’re going to write a product press release, it needs to be done well. Since the purpose of a press release is to inform the media about your upcoming product, it’s critical to ensure that every piece of the press release is newsworthy, professional, and accurate. Brainstorm. Collaborate with business owner on a newsworthy topic and talking points of press release. If we are promoting a specific product or service page, make sure that page on the client website is complete, proofed, edited and optimized for Google.

While you can use these releases to build buzz around your brand and establish yourself as a thought leader, this content is likely used to drive engagement, demand and leads. To that end, be sure to include a direct call-to-action to optimize potential for audience engagement.
The body of your press release should expand the content of the first paragraph. Each paragraph should be no more than 3 or 4 sentences. Break up the body accordingly, but make sure that each paragraph is cohesive and flows well from the preceding paragraph.
I’d recommend pitching the writer first, with an angle specific to their beat. If a case needs to be made to the editor, it can fare better coming from the writer, who’s already had an opportunity to work out an angle with the PR rep. As an editor, I’m more likely to prioritize emails coming from those I have personal relationships with. These have been built over the years from the days when I was the writer presenting to my editors. Starting a new relationship with me as an editor, the most successful pitches have been those offering high profile interviews (editors that still write columns will want to take these for themselves before passing them off to junior writers) or highly specific content, like an original guest contribution. The lead, or first sentence, should grab the reader and say concisely what is happening. For example, if the headline is Careen Publishing releases new WWII novel, the first sentence might be something like, Carpren Publishing, Ltd., today released their first World War II novel by celebrated writer Darcy Kay. It expands the headline enough to fill in some of the details, and brings the reader further into the story. The next one to two sentences should then expand upon the lead.
