One thing I will stress — not only your first paragraph, but your title & keywords are also extremely important. Many journalists I’ve worked with set up alerts when an article w/ a certain keyword combination was published on Google News. So if your press release is about a new innovation in shower sealants, make sure you have keywords like “remodeling,” “bathroom remodeling,” “seepage,” “water damage,” and the like. Don’t force them in there to the point of being awkward, but certainly work in naturally as many keywords as you can.
It was always great working with eReleases. They constantly run specials rewarding companies that use them often. Their staff is always great to work with, helpful and very knowledgeable. I have worked with lots of PR distribution companies and eReleases is by far my favorite.
Write the summary section. The summary area needs to be between two to three sentences long and describes the key focus of the press release. For the product launch, you can write about the product, when it is (or was) scheduled for release, and the target audience.
Another point. When sending a press release to an editor, the best way to send it by copying and pasting the press release as text in the email. (Never send a press release as an attachment.) Here is the argument against my statement above. I always attach the press release to the email and I’ve never had a problem. My counter argument is, How many times have editors rejected your press releases due to it being an attachment and you did not even know this? Here is why I say put the press release as text in the email and NEVER send it as an attachment to an editor. 1) What program does the editor use to publish their press releases? InDesign or a web program. Translation: The editor or writer has to COPY AND PASTE your press release into another program to get it published. 2) An editor what? Received tons of emails every day. Put yourself in the editor’s shoes. The editor is trying to open and get through hundreds of emails every day. If an editor opens an email and finds text in the email, he/she/trans can IMMEDIATELY READ THE PRESS RELEASE and can decide IMMEDIATELY, if they want to publish it. If the press release is attached as a Word document, the email can easily be ignored or deleted. Also the editor, another writer or graphic designer can copy and paste the press release directly from the email into InDesign or a web program. Or they can copy and paste the press release into their own Word document WITHOUT having to TAKE THE TIME TO OPEN an attachment. Also, a publication might have a policy which DOES NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO OPEN AN ATTACHMENT due to the treat of viruses.

Writing a press release without template sometimes is hectic and time consuming. However, templates have made organizations and businesses dream come true. Press release is a statement written to the media. It is a news-announcing document.
Many press release distribution services also offer powerful targeting options. Give your press release the extra reach it needs to land before industry-specific journalists and bloggers, or even those in specific media types (print, blog, etc.). Do your research before you tap into these precision targeting tools to make sure you reach the right people.
You also want to make sure that by scanning it, they will get a good sense of what’s unique and newsworthy about your app. What you also want to keep in mind is that you have to stay factual in your press release and exaggerated marketing adjectives like “great” and “amazing.”
Bottom Line: Don’t rush the creation of your headline. Take the time to craft press release titles that will pack a punch and leave a lasting impression. It may very well be the most important part of your whole press release.
You must limit your press release to one page (or two, if you must), but that doesn’t mean you can’t show people how to learn more. Providing relevant links to your company’s website, where prospective writers can learn more about your mission and what you’ve already accomplished, is a crucial element to the release. Don’t make writers search on their own for more information — guide them as quickly as possible to your website, and keep their interest piqued.
Beware being vague. Sure, essentially you are always trying to promote is yourself – you want to get the word out about what you’re doing now, so people will be interested in what you’re doing in the future. However, even megastars don’t JUST promote themselves. They are the subject of profiles and interviews when they have new projects coming out – and those new projects are the focal point.
