Send your release by email, and use formatting sparingly. Giant type and multiple colors don’t enhance your news, they distract from it. If at all possible – and in 99.99999% of cases, it IS possible – your press release should not exceed one page. If you seem to be going over while you’re writing it, don’t sweat it. Just keep writing until you get out all of the information in your head. Then, go back and start cutting.

I’d recommend pitching the writer first, with an angle specific to their beat. If a needs to be made to the editor, it can fare better coming from the writer, who’s already had an opportunity to work out an angle with the PR rep. As an editor, I’m more likely to prioritize emails coming from those I have personal relationships with.
