Well, for starters, a press release has several names; a press statement, media release or a news release. No matter what we call it, the purpose and identity of it remains the same. It is basically an officially recorded and written announcement which is issued by an organization for the target audience. To be exact, it is a compelling and short news story where the ultimate goal is to pique the interest of the target audience by containing all the information about an event (what, why, who, when, where, and how).
Less is more. Let me say that again, do not go over-board with hyperlinks and anchor text in your press releases. Use only 2-3 links for every 500 words of text in your press release. Since press releases should be kept between 400-600 words, this means 2-3 links of anchor text for the entire press release. Using too many links makes the press release seem spammy and gives search engines a reason to penalize or block it from SERPs.
Do not waste time writing the headline until the release is done. Copy editors write the real headlines in newspapers and magazines, but it is good to come up with a catchy title or headline for the release. This headline may be your only chance. Keep it concise and factual. It’s a good idea not to write it until after you finish the press release. You don’t know yet exactly what you—–or those you interview, will say. When you have finished a draft of the release, you may decide to revise your lead—or not. Then, and only then, think about the headline.
In the not-too-distant past, businesses and SEO agencies used the sites as an SEO ploy. This may come as surprise to small business owners, as a number of press release distribution services advertise that their press releases are “SEO optimized” or “SEO friendly”. What they mean is that the press release is coded in a way where if a person types in certain keywords, particularly into Google News, then the press release is more likely to appear in the results than a non-optimized release.
