While you can use these releases to build buzz around your brand and establish yourself as a thought leader, this content is likely used to drive engagement, demand and leads. To that end, be sure to include a direct call-to-action to optimize potential for audience engagement.
“We’ve been especially pleased with the help and involvement of our parent-teacher organizations in collecting signatures for the petition,” Joyce Temple, director of Minneapolis Families against Violence
It is where the meat comes in. In your second paragraph, add some color to your project. Obviously, what you include in this paragraph depends very much on what you’re promoting, but for instance, describe the music – comparisons are always a little tricky, but a few comparisons to other artists give the reader at least a frame of reference. Highlight the reason why your story is unique. List your tour dates. Use this paragraph to give information that a member of the media could use to tell your story. In other words, your first paragraph tells them Artist X is doing Y. The second paragraph might give them Artist X is doing Y because of Z.
There are some clear rules when it comes to writing press releases – covering everything from news angle to structure. Debbie Leven of The PR Coach offers a complete guide to writing press releases that get results
Before you even attempt to write a press release, think about the things you like to read, watch and listen to in the media. Most of us are generally interested in things we haven’t heard before, find surprising or help solve our problems. So before drafting your press release, it’s worth asking yourself these questions:
Some sites that promote themselves as free sometimes offer very little for nothing. The free sites frequently do not actually distribute news to media outlets, but only post the release on their website – sometimes for only a limited time. They may urge visitors to pay additional fees to “publish” the press release or to “upgrade” for additional services, such as including live links or posting the release beyond the minimal time period. Some sites merely run advertisements that link to other press release sites.
“Nofollow” all backlinks in press releases in order to avoid penalties by Google. This requires that each link’s tag contain the rel=”nofollow” attribute. If using nofollow links makes you hesitant about putting out a press release, then you’re doing it for the wrong reasons.
Some press releases are available for immediate release. It means anyone can share the information as soon as the release is made public. Other press releases may have time limits that allow only certain media sources to report them immediately. They’re offered to other news services, websites or blog owners for publication at a later time.
Selikoff also warns against using a canned quote talking about how great your company is. Use quote that provides some insight instead. It’s also helpful to know some publications’ standards on using quotes from a release. While blogs and very small publications will often use information directly from a release, and re-use quotes you include in the release in their story, major publications most often will not.

A common strategy for maximizing the effectiveness of press releases was the practice of embedding optimized links throughout the article. Over the past several years, though, Google has determined those links to be unnatural, meaning that you should aggressively no-follow syndicated links from PR sites and avoid keyword-rich anchor text. It’s still entirely safe to link from your domain to your domain, but we work with a lot of small businesses that still insist upon stuffing as many links as they can into each release. Instead, we encourage them to keep the number of links to one or two and focus more on the material that’s promoted instead of the destination of the embedded links.
As standard all press releases must adhere to the following structure: Date format, headline, summary, body text, quotes, final information and notes to editors. Please bare this in mind when viewing the templates and writing your own.
Press releases are an essential element of any public relations strategy. These short, compelling documents detail product releases, event announcements and other newsworthy items a company produces. As CEO of the tech PR firm Cutler Group, it’s my job to help take the business dealings of innovative tech startups and turn them into press coverage — and one of the first steps my team and I take is writing good press releases on our clients’ behalf.
Sadly, even small mistakes can minimize the impact of your press release. Editors won’t take the time to correct your mistakes — if it doesn’t meet specific press release standards, it will end up in the trash! So double and triple check all of your work before distribution.
Distribution is important, but having a real news story and a well written release is even more important. Your release shouldn’t be a sales pitch, and it should be free of spelling and grammar mistakes. If it is poorly written and lacks news value, it won’t matter who you send it to because it will go straight to the trash bin.
The truth is, just because you wrote something (especially if it’s generic) and it gets placed on a lot of syndicates, doesn’t mean that people will purchase.  Exposure doesn’t mean sales.  Instead, you need to create a newsworthy PR that is not only unique but catchy too.
My strategy was to present FreightCenter as an exciting place to work where there are many opportunities to grow. Right away, I supported this claim in my lead when I said FreightCenter will announce “a major overhaul of its company positioning and brand.” This statement was purposely used to create curiosity so the reader would continue reading. When writing a release, it’s very important to catch the reader’s attention in your lead. Do this by providing the most important information in a way that will compel the reader to read on. To further support my claim and satisfy the reader’s curiosity, I included a quote from our COO Doug Walls in the third paragraph. The quote should answer any questions the reader might have.
If you have never written a press release before, you should consider using a professional writer or service. Press releases are about telling a story, your story. The truth is that writing from a journalistic approach takes years of studying and practice. That’s not to say that any good writer isn’t capable of doing it; it’s just to say that you will want to be as knowledgeable as a professional or hire one.
Sounds pretty hopeless, right? Wrong. While relationship-building still helps you get into popular publications, we now have the opportunity to quit playing the waiting game and generate our own buzz. By turning your PR strategy into an inbound one, you create opportunities that weren’t there before and carve out a place for your company, building meaningful mindshare with your target audiences in the process.
Whether you run a digital marketing company or a record label, press releases are critical. Ideal for notifying the media and your readers that something new and exciting has taken place within your company, press releases can be used to announce new hires, partnerships, product launches, and more.
Get serious about building relationships with journalists and influencers in your industry. In the real estate industry, for example, Twitter is not mainstream. However, we leverage Twitter for sourcing news for our blog and relationship building with government agencies, journalists, and writers. I put contacts in lists, include their stories in our blog posts, retweet their work, and I also capture their contact information and connect with them on other social platforms. When I do have something important to reach out about with these contacts, the goal is for them to see my email and say: “Oh, I know this guy” and have that also have a positive undertone. This is a longtail, relationship building strategy, one that your competitors are unlikely to follow.
