Here is a recent news release we published. In it you will see that the first sentence or two tells the whole story (what we call the 5 W’s). There are also multimedia components to the news release such as logos for the companies, social media links and images of the products the company sells.
I am a business development consultant for a small financial capital management firm in the midwest. We conduct approximately 10 sizable transactions a year, which we feel could be press worthy. As I mentioned we are very small (less than 10 employees), but we are established (been in business 10+ years). What would you suggest the best route to take in getting the “word” out of these deals? A wire service mentioned in the article, perhaps Businesswire, or doing it ourselves? If we do it ourselves, can you give me any pointers?
As a reporter, my immediate response to that press release was that it’s not important because it expended an entire sentence saying absolutely nothing. And I assumed (probably rightly) that the company’s marketing team was a bunch of idiots.

Prepare questions. Write down the questions you want to ask. For example, How long have you been working here? What do you like most about your job? and Is there anything you would like to tell our readers?
This is why the easiest, most organic way to thoroughly cover the who/what/when/where/why (+why anyone should care) is still a press release, even if that press release takes the form of a blog post. Anything else is a just an inconvenient patchwork of email strings, phone calls and DropBox links.
The site itself has a very busy homepage with press releases visible on the first page. There does seem to be a good mix of release topics if you dig into the site. Small businesses are mentioned alongside larger companies, but finding the information takes time to make sense of what is there.

There are a couple of reasons why mass pitching is a horrible idea. Like every other piece of effective copy, a press release should be written with a target audience in mind. However, with press releases, you don’t write directly for that target audience. You write them for the editor/journalist/broadcaster and you tailor them to the readership/viewers/listeners of that publication/programme.
Put all your thought and energy into those first lines – including the email subject line. Think about it as writing a news article with a grabbing headline and a sub-heading. If it’s good enough, the journalist may use it and this will increase your chances of getting through. Who wouldn’t want to have their work cut out for them?
