Send your release by email, and use formatting sparingly. Giant type and multiple colors don’t enhance your news, they distract from it. Put the release in the body of the email, not as an attachment. If you must use an attachment, make it a plain text or Rich Text Format file. You must limit your press release to one page (or two, if you must), but that doesn’t mean you can’t show people how to learn more. Providing relevant links to your company’s website, where prospective writers can learn more about your mission and what you’ve already accomplished, is a crucial element to the release. Don’t make writers search on their own for more information — guide them as quickly as possible to your website, and keep their interest piqued.
Failing to include a powerful call to action is like selling tickets to a speech you’re giving, packing the venue…and then saying nothing to the audience. If people have read to the end of your press release, it means you’ve engaged and interested them. Don’t waste that opportunity! Maybe you want people to visit your author page, attend a book launch event, or check out some other aspect of your author activities. Be clear about what your aim is.
Because reporters are busy people, you must assume that they will only read the first sentence and then scan the rest — and even that’s a generous assumption. Get the message of your press release out quickly. Every important point should be addressed in the first few sentences. The subsequent paragraphs should be for supporting information.

As you are not writing to your target audience directly, you need to write your press release in the third person. So “ABC Ltd has signed a £5 million deal with XYZ Ltd” not “We’ve signed a deal with…”

When writing a press release, your aim should not be to promote your business, stroke the ego of the managing director, or build backlinks from highly reputable sources. Your aim should be to hand journalists a ready-to-print story that is of interest to their readers.
What made this press release successful was the intersection of the exclusivity of the announcement (there were only a select few companies who were made official Shopify Plus partners in the first round, and we were one of them), the fact that it was newsworthy, and having a great partner tied into the announcement itself.
