I tend to model my press releases after the ones written by the professional Public Relations folks I learned from during my 20 years of working in the offline world. In order to get published in newspapers, you needed a compelling title followed by a succinct story written in 3rd person narrative that left the reader wanting more.

Teamwork will go very far in helping to develop an effective press release. Collaboration is how some of the finest marketing pieces are created. So why limit the idea of the piece and its composition to just your ideas? Rather, brainstorm with a few others and co-create and co-write the piece together. This will result in unrivaled clarity and perception, and it can drastically enhance the quality as well as the reader engagement of the release overall.
If you can’t get the words right straight away when writing a press release, keep trying. Most press releases go through several drafts. It’s essential that you get across the key points and benefits.
All press releases must include a headline, sub-heading and a notes to editors section listing the contact information of the academics mentioned. The number of paragraphs will vary according to the newsworthiness of the story, however, the introduction must always answer the five Ws and a quotation is always needed. It is good practice to limit press releases to approximately 300-350 words, featuring the key information presented with an angle in mind.
Thanx for the great list . I just want to ask you about Sharewellnewswire.com .Sharewell Newswire offers paid press release distribution services . It will be a pleasure if you add Our Website in Your data base .
Subheads are remarkably useful tools, yet usually overlooked by press release writers. Basically, the press release subhead gives you the opportunity to flesh out your angle and further hook the reporter, without stepping on the drama of the press release headline.
Avoid reposting the actual press release on your website because this can denigrate your content authenticity and page-score ranking with Google and the other search engines. Instead, write a unique teaser paragraph or two, and then link out to the release on the host site that distributed it or one of the major media outlets that picked it up.
This is one of the best graphics I’ve seen describing the correct formula for a press release. However, you forgot one thing. Just above the Headline you forgot to write the words: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (in call caps). If I may please ask you to revise your graphic, you would help a lot of new writers to learn the true formula of an Associated Press press release standard. Thanks again for your well designed and informative graphic.

What made this press release successful was the intersection of the exclusivity of the announcement (there were only a select few companies who were made official Shopify Plus partners in the first round, and we were one of them), the fact that it was newsworthy, and having a great partner tied into the announcement itself. The latter point was especially critical to the PR, and the notoriety of the Shopify brand really gave the release ‘legs’ in terms of how far it was distributed and the impact it made.
Ideally, quotes will be from key stakeholders in your company including your executive team, project leads, or those directly impacted by your announcement. Quoting key figures and authorities underlines the importance of your development. The chosen quote should shape your narrative and emphasize the core of the announcement. Don’t ask everyone in your office for a comment or feel compelled to quote all 25 people included in the acquisition — pick one or two critical spokespeople and focus the quotes around their unique perspective.
The majority of relevant journalists today can be found on Twitter actively sharing industry trends, news, and thoughts. While 140 characters doesn’t leave a lot of room for “fluff,” it forces publicists to create a hyper-focused, creative, and straightforward message that can be seen not only by the journalist, but also by their entire follower base. Better yet, pitch when replying to one of their relevant tweets. Make a pitch public and you’d be surprised how quickly others may respond!
This format is important because it’s what journalists follow when they create a story, so if you want your PR to be picked up after using a free PR distribution service, make it as simple as possible for your audience.
The idea behind this press release was to educate people about a new dating app (small business) as well as empathize with any single person who reads it. We placed a small insert about why we developed the app and let readers know that we too are single and feel what they’re going through.
As far as CPM for the Ad reward videos are there any major differences as far as price for a 15 second video vs a 30 second video or are they all under the “Reward video category” regardless of video length.
People now have control over where, when, and how they consume information. As a result, public relations is no longer about feeding into a traditional news cycle; it’s about providing relevant content when, where, and how your prospects, influencers, and customers will consume it.

Hi Makori, thanks for the comment and great question. The headline and the first sentence are both incredibly important and should both be treated as grabbers. I would argue that the headline is the most important element though because it is often the element that gets people to click and read the press release.
Bad PR Titles – As an example, let’s say you own a software company that is releasing its next version with a much anticipated update that users have begged for the past few years. You could propose a boring title like: “XYZ Software Company Announces Newest Version of XYZ Pro.” This title certainly is newsworthy. It’s definitely going to get approved by the editors. But, the problem is that it’s boring. It does nothing to engage the reader.

Search engine optimization (SEO) refers to the process of optimizing a website to improve how it ranks on search engines like Google. The higher a website ranks, the more likely it is that people will click on it and visit it. If many high quality websites, such the Washington Post or USA Today, link back to your company’s website then search engines will “know” that your website is of a higher quality as well. This will help to increase your ranking on that search engine’s results page.
Bottom Line: Using free press releases distribution websites is a fruitless PR and SEO strategy, experts warn. Paying to distribute news through a legitimate service will surely produce better results that that can be tracked through media monitoring and measurement. “You get what you pay for” when you chose a news distribution service.
A press release is not a guaranteed marketing tool. Temper your expectations. Don’t anticipate that every press release you write will always be picked up and passed along by mainstream media sources.
Your business networking groups – If you have been attending local business networking groups, chances are some of the members work in the local PR scene. If not, ask some of your group members if they know of any PR agents.
I drafted this press release on the first-ever senior friendly TV put out by TV EARS. The timing was ideal since it was leading up to the Consumer Electronic Show (CES). This release was published on numerous sites and also resulted in feature stories and live interviews at CES with national media outlets. There are a few tips from this particular release.
Be as concise as humanly possible so that you’re able to give readers a meaty chunk of what they’re about to eat without giving away all of the ingredients. From there, the paragraphs that follow should work like an inverted pyramid – expanding on the bullet points you’ve touched upon in your first line with bigger (but non-essential) facts. This is the time to present products specs or a few quirky tidbits from your survey. As you progress, try to keep your language snappy and mildly objective – because nobody wants to eat a dry piece of toast.
