This may come as surprise to small business owners, as a number of press release distribution services advertise that their press releases are “SEO optimized” or “SEO friendly”. What they mean is that the press release is coded in a way where if a person types in certain keywords, particularly into Google News, then the press release is more likely to appear in the results than a non-optimized release. How much more likely? I haven’t seen one company yet give hard numbers. It’s more likely that this is an advertising gimmick that press release distribution services use to sell their service to less informed clients.
As mentioned, we only included free sites with high ranks because you are who you associate with when it comes to search optimization and inbound links. Their ranks tell us about their SEO potential for any live links we put on their site. Over the years that we’ve maintained this list, PRLog has always remained at the top, but even sites like PR.com have lost rank across all search reputation monitors.
Example: A pizza shop owner has added “vegan pizza” to his menu. We create a unique page on the client’s pizza website that talks about the new product, with pictures and maybe a video showing how the specialty vegan pizza is made.
Canonical tags should be utilized in the event that large chunks of text from your site will be pasted right into the press release, or you plan to place the press release directly on your site or blog.
This press release from Samsung features their new Smart TV designed to unite entertainment with elegant art display. When a product lands on Oprah’s wish list, the “Oprah Effect” often occurs. By virtue of the TV mogul’s popularity, the product gets instant brand recognition and an increase in sales. Definitely worth a press release, and it’s something that the company can continue to talk about for a long time.
We conduct research studies throughout the year on various topics that we feel are relevant and of interest to our target audience. We sent out a press release a couple of months ago featuring our data monitoring survey that received a lot of positive feedback. It was picked up by various publications, including TLNT and Recruiter.com.
This may sound surprising coming from the owner of a digital PR agency, but I’ve got a love/hate relationship with press releases. If I’m being honest, sometimes it’s mostly hate (and primarily directed toward press release distribution services that make big promises and rarely, if ever, deliver). And I’m not alone: many pros in the PR industry are ready to dance on the grave of traditional press release distribution.
Using UVC light, Agent J is able to eradicate even hard to kill germs like Staph, MRSA, EGLE, and more. In addition, the Agent J robot does this without the use of chemicals. The robot’s patented KillemDead 2000 technology senses the room’s dimensions and then delivers the exact amount of UVC rays needed to eradicate the infecting germs in the operating room. Once the cycle is completed, the staff is alerted by way of text that the room has been completely disinfected.
BriefingWire.com lets you setup multiple Business Profiles which is great for client submissions. In fact, the company profile page provides a dofollow link, even before you submit your first release!
While operating under the same company, there are two versions of this free press release distribution: free content distribution and paid content distribution (targeted). Both offer different services for different business needs, creating a versatile free press release service.
If you need SEO on a budget, you’ll find more basic reports and decent local pickup with Marketwired. Their Account Reps are reportedly friendly and their rates are more competitive than PR Newswire and BusinessWire, making it a decent buy for IT industry and local market releases, You can score press release distribution for as little as $150 entry-level.
That being said, press releases today no longer hold the same SEO value they did several years ago, as Google started recognizing that some companies were using them to gain backlinks, rather than sharing news topics.
Optimization features help you gain SEO traction and visibility through free press release distribution. They  will also help you gain a better understanding of what people are searching for as it pertains to your industry.
This could be something controversial, something interesting, or something emotionally engaging. Avoid at all costs something bland, vanilla or dry. It’s better to leave this out entirely if you can’t think of anything relevant.
“There aren’t really a prescriptive number of pages or word count.” If I may add one important aspect from journalism school 101: any article for a newspaper (and a press release ideally ends up as an article “as if” the journalist had written it him/herself) needs to be structured in such a way, that you can clip from the end (!!!) without it losing stringency and closure. That is entirely different from creative “A Winter’s tale” or an Agatha Christie whodunit would lose much, if not all, of its charm if you left out the last, say, two, paragraphs! But since (in the olden days) a piece of journalism needed to fit in with the rest of the layout (including advertising and late breaking news), whoever redacted a piece had to be able to cut off bits and pieces at the end without having to read, let alone reformulate the rest of the article. That said, this rule still stands today though space is not always a bottleneck in the digital world (but – you never know, maybe your press release even makes it into the print version!). So train yourself to write like a (good) journalist. If you don’t you could wonder for years what made your press releases fall by the wayside time and again.
It’s important to include your company logo or a relevant image with every press release. The better the image, the more real estate it might get in print or online. Also, traditional press releases always conclude with # symbols underneath the last line to signify the end of the release.
If you are submitting press releases on behalf of clients, you either need to setup different accounts for each client, or manually update the “Company Info” for each client’s submission. This is VERY important because the ‘website’ field is what provides you the link.
There’s no denying that press releases serve a purpose when distributed directly to journalists over the wire.  Press releases get sent to the attention of assignment editors at newspapers, television and radio stations, magazines, trade publications and other news outlets, and follow a specific format designed to work well within this type of news generation system (see “Format for a press release”).
Always simple and accurate, plus love the human backstop to the uploading front-end. They really make sure it looks good, and suggest alternate headlines & captions to improve readability. Great service.
This is one of the best graphics I’ve seen describing the correct formula for a press release. However, you forgot one thing. Just above the Headline you forgot to write the words: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (in call caps). If I may please ask you to revise your graphic, you would help a lot of new writers to learn the true formula of an Associated Press press release standard. Thanks again for your well designed and informative graphic.

Subheads are remarkably useful tools, yet usually overlooked by press release writers. Basically, the press release subhead gives you the opportunity to flesh out your angle and further hook the reporter, without stepping on the drama of the press release headline.

First, plan on using an email address on an actual domain. A few sites don’t allow free email addresses (like Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail), so it’s good practice to use a standard email address for every site. I use “info@mikemunter.com” for all my press release testing and submissions.
News reporters are under a tremendous amount of stress to churn out stories. Consequently, any news item that’s delivered to them press-ready is a blessing. Translation: if you can craft a press release that already reads like a quality news story, it’s far more likely to get published. So, how do you write a news story?
Ideally, you want your press release to land in the recipient’s primary inbox. This is why you should not send bulk emails to hundreds of contacts. Using Mailchimp or another newsletter service will usually get your email categorized as a promotion, not primary inbox material. Even individual emails can end up in the spam folder if the sender’s email / domain is blacklisted. Check yours here:
