Give your press release an attention grabbing title that’s to the point. You want to attract the attention of news reporters and readers. Keep the overall length of your press release short – this isn’t the right forum for verbose language. The writing should be concise and professional. While it’s not necessary to stick to a particular style guide, you should defer to the editorial guidelines of your PR distributor. Research existing press releases in your industry to get a feel for the style and tone. Insert just one hyperlink to your website from branded anchor text (eg. Wpromote). Explain about your company, and include a link to your company’s home page. Include titles of the people you cite, whether it’s a CEO, CFO, or another title that isn’t an alphabet soup combination. If you use statistics or data, link to the appropriate source material.
I slogged through writing a press release last year on my own, and it was pretty bad. It wasn’t all that clear and didn’t get picked up by anyone, but at least it took me a long time! I’ve been dreading the creation of this year’s version, but I have new hope now!
Another trick is to imagine your story is going to be covered on a TV or radio programme. A presenter generally has around 5-6 seconds to introduce each item eg And coming up next … why a local cafe owner is giving a free coffee this weekend to anyone born in July. If your story was going to be featured on the radio today, how would the presenter introduce it? Asking yourself that question should give you the top line of your story.

Then, there is another school of thought that if you have the time and energy, you can post on as many sites as possible and get more sustained traffic and visibility to your site. If you’re so inclined, here is a list of over 60 free press release distribution sites, compiled by Press Release Point and they will even post to all those sites for you…for a modest fee. It kind of defeats the purpose of using free sites but for a few dollars, it could be worth saving your valuable time.
Send the press release out in a timely fashion. Sent too early, people won’t remember it; sent too late, they may already be committed to something else. Two to three weeks in advance is a good timeline.
Ensure Your Kickstarter Has Everything Writers Want to See Because many games-to-be promoted on Kickstarter have not come to fruition with what they promised, writers are cautious about which Kickstarters they cover. To increase your chances of coverage, you must now, more than ever, show proof of progress and the ability to deliver. This of course includes an excellent video and other page assets, but many writers want to see a playable demo. (On your Kickstarter page, you reference a playable pre-alpha. Any chance you could derive a playable demo from something like that and make it available to the Kickstarter audience/press? It may help).
As you sift through your message boards looking for quotes, you see a trend appearing. There are lots of messages criticizing Hollywood actresses and pop singers for being too thin. Many girls are saying that seeing these women make them feel bad about their own bodies. A number of the boys are pointing out that they don’t find ultra-thin women appealing.
There’s a trick to writing press releases, though. Your message has to be newsworthy without sounding like a blatant advertisement. The release is written in an unbiased format so the reader trusts the information to be accurate.
The job of the press release title is to grab attention and encourage the journalist to read more. Don’t labour over what title might look good in print – most journalists/editors will change the title to suit their readership.
Creativity in press releases is to be applauded. However, remember that a press release is essentially a sales pitch. Not only can trying to be too cutesy come off as cheesy to the max but getting caught up in the creative can sometimes obscure your message. If you have to choose between going all Kafka and going all news copy, go for the news copy. Be sure your main points are crystal clear before throwing in those obscure references and the like.
