redistricting reform workshop press release how to write a creative press release

Not every business is exciting to everyone. It can be harder to get media coverage working in sanitation than it can in celeb gossip. But just because it is harder doesn’t make it impossible. Be creative in the way you approach the ordinary aspects of your niche industry. Take your time thinking outside the box. Find something or someone interesting to talk about – especially if it involves other people. Don’t talk about yourself.

If you were going to write a press release about your new product, it needs to be newsworthy. In other words, nobody wants to read a press release that just says, “Hey, we made a thing!” Instead, arrange your press release so that it includes the most unique benefits of your new product.
To be more effective, small business owners should try sending their press releases to a few dozen journalists who have recently covered similar stories in their local paper or in a trade magazine. They should send the release at least a few weeks in advance of whatever is described in the release (for instance, a new product, service or an event) actually happens.
Some press release distribution services (discussed in more detail below) will charge extra to add visual content. But this is well worth the price! Visuals are a major draw for journalists who are on the hunt for their next story.
Many businesses choose to hire a local public relations firm or a PR freelancer. They will know the ins-and-outs of your local press outlets as well as the online ones. Here is how you can find these professionals:
Good PR Titles – Try to be more creative. Revamp the title above to make it punchier, catchier, and more engaging. For instance: “Almost Human: XYZ Pro Takes Thinking Out of Doing; New Update Ads Human-Response Feature to Interface.”
And time your releases right. If you want to send out something at the beginning of the tour as a kind of save the date that’s a good idea, but be sure to follow up with individual media as relevant dates approach.
Always remember that many editing teams are overworked and understaffed. If you can make life easier for them, you’re more likely to get coverage. If you write a press release that’s close to the way the editor will actually publish it, it may see publication with minimal editing. But if you fill it with fluffy advertising copy, don’t use proper AP style, etc., the editor will surely delete this kind of fluff. Everybody says they’re the leader. Don’t waste the editor’s time. The place to put a description is in the company information section of the release. But keep it accurate and factual.
Another point. When sending a press release to editor, the best way to send it by copying and pasting the press release as text in the email. (Never send a press release as an attachment.) Here is the argument against my statement above. I always attach the press release to the email and I’ve never had a problem. My counter argument is, How many times have editors rejected your press releases due to it being an attachment and you did not even know this? Here is why I say put the press release as text in the email and NEVER send it as an attachment to an editor. 1) What program does the editor use to publish their press releases? InDesign or a web program. Translation: The editor or writer has to COPY AND PASTE your press release into another program to get it published. 2) An editor what? Received tons of emails every day. Put yourself in the editor’s shoes. The editor is trying to open and get through hundreds of emails every day. If an editor opens an email and finds text in the email, he/she/trans can IMMEDIATELY READ THE PRESS RELEASE and can decide IMMEDIATELY, if they want to publish it. If the press release is attached as a Word document, the email can easily be ignored or deleted. Also the editor, another writer or graphic designer can copy and paste the press release directly from the email into InDesign or a web program. Or they can copy and paste the press release into their own Word document WITHOUT having to TAKE THE TIME TO OPEN an attachment. Also, a publication might have a policy which DOES NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO OPEN AN ATTACHMENT due to the treat of viruses.
E-mail communication continues to grow rapidly, which means this is the best time to take advantage of email marketing. Get people to hear you by writing a high quality press release and then distribute the news via e-mail.
G. Pricing, availability and coming up. Just a line or 2 full of facts: stating the app’s price, the OS requirements, countries, etc. What I like to add is a really short preview/teaser of what’s coming up: the next app to come in the same app series or something exciting. Make sure you don’t confuse the reader, though.

Include the website address, as well as any social media channels you or the band uses to promote your work. If there is anything special about any of the shows, for instance, if a show is an afternoon gig or if the show is 18+ only, include that information.

I am a business development consultant for a small financial capital management firm in the midwest. We conduct approximately 10 sizable transactions a year, which we feel could be press worthy. As I mentioned we are very small (less than 10 employees), but we are established (been in business 10+ years). What would you suggest the best route to take in getting the “word” out of these deals? A wire service mentioned in the article, perhaps Businesswire, or doing it ourselves? If we do it ourselves, can you give me any pointers?
