Personally, I don’t think press releases help the page rank of a website. They might result in a bump in traffic as they themselves (the press releases) will get search engine traffic but Google has made it clear it doesn’t to reward the page rank of sites because of press release campaigns.
I don’t know about you, but I’m a little tired of hearing all this talk about the death of the press release. Any time a new forum for marketing comes around, people want to write off press release distribution as old and outdated.
However, if you have the time, you are probably better off saving your money and writing the press release yourself. For tips on how to write your press release, view our how to guide. If you are having writer’s block and need some ideas, look at these press release examples from the pros.
The Small Business Encyclopedia defines press releases — also known as news releases — as brief, printed statements that outline the major facts of a news story in journalistic style [source: Answers.com]. A press release should read like a news story, written in third-person, citing quotes and sources and containing standard press release information.
2.     Press release distribution is fairly inexpensive. Most companies write their own press releases. The only expense comes with hiring a press release distribution service to get the story in the hands of key media members. But even this is inexpensive, and when compared with paid advertising, press release distribution is almost always the more affordable option.
Check to see if your press release is indexed by going to Google and in the search box, enter info:URL. Replace “URL” with the full url of your release, including http://. Do not put a space between “info:” and “URL”
WASHINGTON — The Federal Communications Commission order overturning Net Neutrality protections was published in the Federal Register on Thursday morning, triggering a countdown clock for certain legal and congressional actions to overturn the widely unpopular decision.
Hello. Although I personally reckon this post is a bit prescriptive (I prefer devs just say Hey, I’ve made a NEW THING! Here it is!, there are some good tips regarding content to possibly include. (Just, y’know, avoid doing the robot thing. I get 50+ PRs on a good a day (on a bad day, I get more), and many of them look identical in structure and that’s a FIVE-ALARM WARNING to bin every one of the things.) In terms of format, though, speaking as a journo, sending me a Word document is a really great way to get me to immediately delete your PR. Send the text in the *body* of the email, so I can easily access and search it later. Do not make me load up some other app or even fire up Quick Look to view your copy. (Also, a *huge* number of devs I know don’t use Word these days, threatening any fancy formatting. PDF’s fine for an online press kit, though—no problems copying and pasting from it, assuming you’ve done the PDF right.) And I’m sure this sounds grumpy as hell, but when you’re bombarded by email, you need to be able to filter things very quickly. So, when should you press ‘send’? The general rule is ‘early in the week, early in the day’. Unfortunately, there is no magic hour. If you’re approaching someone who writes for a living, avoid late afternoon and Friday, when they are already signing off and might not remember your case the next time they sit at their desk.
WASHINGTON – The Office of the Director of Science and Technology (DS&T) within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI)—in partnership with the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence (OUSD[I])— announced today the winners of its first public challenge contest, “Xpress,” to explore artificial intelligence (AI) approaches with the potential to transform the process by which analysts currently support policymakers and warfighters through the research and generation of written products.
4.     Press releases can establish you as an industry expert. Why is it important to be seen as an expert? First, expertise helps you gain the trust of your customers. Once they trust you, they’re likelier to buy from you. But being an expert is also good for media relations. Whenever the media needs someone to comment on a story related to your industry, you want to be the one they call on.

The next step in your press release writing process is creating a killer headline. Your headline should grab the attention of your audience (whether that’s an editor, reporter, or the general public) and encourage them to keep reading.
The following is a great press release example. It has a sales aspect to it (something you typically want), it’s on a topic that’s worthy of being written about, it reads like an actual article (another key attribute), and it’s got some good quotes in it as well.
We read every letter, fax, or e-mail we receive, and we will convey your comments to CIA officials outside OPA as appropriate. However, with limited staff and resources, we simply cannot respond to all who write to us.
Good PR Titles – Try to be more creative. Revamp the title above to make it punchier, catchier, and more engaging. For instance: “Almost Human: XYZ Pro Takes Thinking Out of Doing; New Update Ads Human-Response Feature to Interface.”
One small downside we noted when reviewing their free trial for press release distribution is that the trial is mainly meant as a way to see how their submission interface works; the release is posted only on their site and is not guaranteed to post due to the high volume of submissions.
As a matter of fact, press releases are branding and credibility tools, not SEO tools. They are a great way to get the word out about a company, product, or service, and to more effectively brand that company, product, or service.
Just like writing the perfect blog post title, setting up your press release for success starts with your headline. You only have one line to work with, which can seem scary, but consider diction carefully to make your headline captivating.
Mashable is a global, multi-platform media and entertainment company. Powered by its own proprietary technology, Mashable is the go-to source for tech, digital culture and entertainment content for its dedicated and influential audience around the globe.
When you do your research, identify working patterns and deadlines. Many weekly local papers, for example, have a Tuesday deadline for Thursday publication. So, you might be wise not to issue a time-sensitive press release to that audience on a Wednesday.
A trend I’ve noticed is that many past free press release websites are no longer free (but let you set up a free account to then pay). If you find any of these sites no longer offer free press release distribution, let us know by commenting below.
Many people think press releases have to be chock full of buzzwords and branded terms. Big data anyone? Five syllable words you have to look up on Thesaurus.com? Quotes from every executive on the planet that go on for pages? We’ve seen it all. Unfortunately, so have reporters — and they are not fans.
If all that sounds too difficult, you may want to spend the extra money to get a reporter to write the press release. Any good reporter will make the release look like a story, which means it’s more likely to be picked up and republished. Luckily there are plenty out-of-work reporters out there right now.
A good tip is to make sure that the subject line has something interesting to say, so that the editor, journalist or media person will want to open it. Another smart idea is to add a well-written paragraph to your email to ensure that it gets read. Afterwards, I spend ample time conducting media relations follow-up calls.

Palamedes PR: This is a UK agency with a very nicely designed site, which is a pleasure to navigate.  One aspect of Palamedes PR that is cool is their “price match guarantee.” They state that if you find a lower price for the same type of service elsewhere, they will match it.
RULE #2: Have a newsworthy story. To get your message communicated through the publication, you need to convince the reporter/editor that your message (or the story surrounding it) is newsworthy. So it’s got to have appeal to the entire readership of the publication.
Any free PR distribution service will NEVER yield the kind of quality publicity that paid distribution services can get you because they lack real credibility with major media news outlets. SEO marketers use these so called free non-branded PR distribution sites mainly for SEO purposes: to build backlinks, generate social media buzz, improve PageRank, attract traffic and readers, etc.
If you’ve identified the publication and the section you want to pitch your story to, and are just missing the correct journalist contact information, make sure you know where to find it. To begin with, you can use a limited free version of the sites below to begin your media list. Each allows you to look up email addresses and phone numbers for a few free contacts before asking for a fee:
This paragraph is your details paragraph. It is here that you give background, stories, history, information, or stats. This is where you paint a picture and bring in all the other stuff you want people to know about your announcement.
To make the most of your press releases, it’s important to find a distribution service that meets your needs. For many, free PR services provide the perfect solutions for affordability, visibility, and efficiency.
An effective press release takes time and effort in order to be put together correctly. If you are just sending them out with no strategy or purpose involved, most of the time they simply fall on deaf ears.
The intrigue/compulsion factor of your book press release headline needs to be balanced by some actual information. The best headlines both intrigue and inform – neither function can be ignored.  My article on how to select the perfect book title can help with your headline selection as well.
Most public relations people will send an email, and that is fine. But what I have started doing is following up with the media who open the releases I send and offer them a free sample of whatever I am promoting. I’ve done this successfully with men’s underwear, sports medicine, and organic personal care items. Writers will contribute reviews and add your goods to their gift guides.
