3. You’ll get a pretty report. The release distribution service(s) you choose will send you graphs and charts that detail how far and wide your news has spread. This will include the websites that picked up your news (there will be hundreds, but like a tree falling in the woods with no one to hear it, does content really exist if nobody sees it?), headline impressions (they don’t really matter), page reads (a significantly lower number, that may or may not matter), and interactions/clicks (see previous parenthetical). These reports look impressive, but when you dive into the actual KPIs and ROI, the results of the distribution will probably leave something to be desired.

Black and others say you should assume no one is going to read beyond the first paragraph, which makes it the most important. Many releases also take up a journalistic style, beginning with a dateline, or the city and state the news is coming from.

Here’s a link to my favorite press release that I wrote for The Bethel Inn Resort’s 100th Anniversary a couple years ago. Celebrating an anniversary is always a newsworthy event, especially if it hits the century mark. I particularly like this release because it brings into context other major events of 1913. Carrying on the major events theme of 1913, the resort posted a This Day in History-1913 at the front desk. I discovered that the first crossword puzzle was published and that Robert Mondavi was born (parking a wine special in the tavern), among other exciting happenings, including the institution of the dreaded federal income tax.
OK, so that’s all great, but just what, exactly, is considered newsworthy these days?  Online news sites and search engines have made it easier for anyone’s news to grow legs, but what if you want to increase your opportunities to make an impact?  Try answering these questions when you sit down to write your next press release:
If it were easy to write a press release, there would be no need for press release writing services, press release writing articles, books, and newsletters. Press release writing is definitely not easy.
This process involves creating a website section or landing page that houses all of the press releases your organization publishes. Then your graphic designer or video team would create content for your social media specialist to add to your social media posts.
So instead of stuffing your next release with jargon, take a page out of our book (okay, fine, ebook), The Newsworthy Guide to Inbound Public Relations, and brainstorm some creative approaches for your next announcement. Can you include new data? A remarkable graphic or video? A shareable SlideShare? If so, a creative angle will often help carry your content and increase the likelihood of social sharing.
Let’s stick with the theme presented in that report: you run an vitamin web site specializing in weight-loss products. Through the process described in the report, you’ve nailed down a nice, newsworthy topic – teenagers and how they deal with issues of weight. But that’s a broad topic, not a story.
Any time you’re creating contact that is original, you’re establishing yourself as an authority in your industry. You’re positioning yourself as an expert in your niche, and that lets you build a sense of trust and loyalty among your clients and potential customers.
Just as a book title needs to be carefully chosen to interest potential readers, a press release needs a well thought out headline to make it stand out from the endless press releases journalists deal with.
If you are emailing a press release, copy and paste your headline into the subject line of the email. Just to clarify, your headline will be in the subject line as well as in the body of the email. Whatever you do, don’t put things like, “Read this” or “Latest news from me” in the subject line as it will look like spam.
Immediately following your grabber, compel readers to continue on with an engaging game description. Be sure to weave in core benefits, as well as what makes your game unique. Here is a great press release example of a strong game description.

You use this template partly because the media don’t have time to plough through why the world needs a new widget or how it was developed (they simply want to know whether or not your new widget is of interest to their audience) and partly because the template makes it easy to cut the story to fit the space available. No need to edit. Simply cut from the bottom paragraph upwards.
What made this press release successful was the intersection of the exclusivity of the announcement (there were only a select few companies who were made official Shopify Plus partners in the first round, and we were one of them), the fact that it was newsworthy, and having a great partner tied into the announcement itself. The latter point was especially critical to the PR, and the notoriety of the Shopify brand really gave the release ‘legs’ in terms of how far it was distributed and the impact it made.
I paid the extra fees for wider distribution and hyperlinks. (not included otherwise) BUT: PR.COM sends the release out with all links being nofollow! That makes it utterly worthless in terms of SEO. PR.COM strongly suggests using the extra service – paid hyperlinks – for SEO and never makes it clear they will do the links as nofollow.
Beth, the answer lies in reaching the broader audience of workers, particularly those who are covered by workman’s comp, before they are injured. If you work backward from their problems and situations, you should be able to determine what they need to know in advance of need of services. That understanding, in turn, would determine content choices to reach them where they are so they know you’re a resource. Does that help? Sherri

Use title case. Capitalize the first letter of all words in the headline (with the exception of: “a,” “an,” “the,” or prepositions such as: “of,” “to,” or “from”). The combination of upper and lower case makes it easier to read.
Newsroom fax machines and reporters’ inboxes are flooded on a daily basis with press releases from companies, government agencies, non-profit groups, and even average citizens trying to get their neighborhood plight noticed. If you send in a press release that’s riddled with grammatical errors, buried in a convoluted e-mail, or completely irrelevant to the reporter’s coverage area, you might as well be tossing your press release down a sewer drain. If you deluge a news organization with unprofessional or uninteresting releases, your chances of ever getting favorable news coverage are zero-to-slim.
