That means your release needs a good headline. That can be something saying how your new product is going to make life easier, or how it relates to a news event. Your headline should be an attention-grabber, so reporters can see right away how the announcement affects their audience.
Everyone wants to be in the national news, but don’t discount smaller, local, even weekly newspapers. Why? You already have one of the main things they look for in stories: a local angle. There’s also less PR competition, which makes it easier to pitch the reporter (as long as you have a great story!) You have a greater chance of a bigger story, and of the journalist including a photo (which makes it easier to catch the eyes of readers).
In an upper right or left corner, you should have the words “Media Contact,” followed by the name, phone number, and email address of the person reporters should reach out to if they have follow-up questions.

At the end of this section, point to your website. The link should be the exact and complete URL without any embedding so that, even if this page is printed, the link will be printed as it is. For example: http://www.example.com, not Click here to visit the website.
You use this template partly because the media don’t have time to plough through why the world needs a new widget or how it was developed (they simply want to know whether or not your new widget is of interest to their audience) and partly because the template makes it easy to cut the story to fit the space available. No need to edit. Simply cut from the bottom paragraph upwards.
I want to be a trusted resource for that media so I’m trying to give the journalist all the information when they need it so they don’t have to go anywhere else, says Gillian Pommerehn, director of public relations for Crosby Marketing, which is based in Annapolis, Maryland, and whose clients include the U.S. Department of Agriculture and DuPont.

When you do your research, identify working patterns and deadlines. Many weekly local papers, for example, have a Tuesday deadline for Thursday publication. So, you might be wise not to issue a time-sensitive press release to that audience on a Wednesday.
Don’t Beat Around The Bush. A press release is no place for jargon or inefficient communication. Make your point clearly and remove any words, phrases, and approaches that don’t help clarify your point immediately.

For our press release, we decided to take a women in leadership angle. This is because we noticed a lot of buzz recently about women in leadership roles, which in the past was dominated by men. This approach worked well for us. We had our press release written about in over 30% of the outlets we sent the release to, including coverage in Talking New Media and Street Fight Mag.

People want to hear from executives, project leaders, or stakeholders. The more important the individual, the more weight the quote will have to reporters and their readers.
