A few years back, people used to go through the newspapers for the news but nowadays, the internet has replaced the role of the newspapers. Am I right in saying this or not? I am sure that you will agree to the fact that the first thing we do in the morning is to check our social media accounts. We go through the news feed on our Facebook profile and scan through the headlines on Twitter. We do all of this to see what is trending but what exactly makes us stop and actually read something? It’s the catchy and engaging content. That is where writing an engaging press release comes in.

Professionals say to be mindful of what kind of organization you’re reaching out to as well: a reporter at an environmental magazine, for instance, might be turned off by a flood of paper-consuming messages coming from the fax machine.

Getting a journalist to open your email is important, but if your first sentence doesn’t grab them, they may not read any further – which is why you need to get the top line (the most important bit) of your story right at the beginning of your release. Your first line should be a summary of the story (in no more than around 15-20 words) and read like the opening of news story.
Dateline – contains the release date and usually the originating city of the press release. If the date listed is after the date that the information was actually sent to the media, then the sender is requesting a news embargo, which journalists are under no obligation to honor.
Opening paragraph: The opening paragraph has to be strong and include pertinent information, namely what the press release is about, who it affects, and why they should read or act upon it. If you talk of an event or launch, you also need to mention when it will take place.
Your press release is a piece of marketing. And like all marketing materials, it needs a call to action. A simple hyperlink to where readers can download, purchase or learn more about your game works best.
ReleaseWire is our “go to” press release distribution service. We like ReleaseWire because it’s affordable, easy to use and has great reach. It also functions well for clients in a number of different industries.
So this is a double-edged sword. What you really want is for journalists to see your story and cover it in their own unique way (ie, original content they create on their own). If you can also become a valuable source of unique info in your industry, that’s your bigger win. Kari touched on that well as part of this article.
1. Headline. Grab the reader’s attention with a strong, catchy headline with keywords that people will most likely use in their search. This is your opener and what will make your reader want to read on. Include the name of the event and either the location or theme of the event. You won’t want to give too many details up front. If you’re writing an online press release for an event, know that Google will index 60 characters and Yahoo, 120 characters. Use Title Case for your headline. See what PRWeb says about press release headlines.
The website looks quite professional, and the huge amount of information available on the site is quite impressive. There are visible releases on the Home page, and visitors can access press releases by Date, Industry, Subject and Region. The site does offer distribution services and seem to have solid results with this element of the site. They even have a Service page, where you get an idea of the many options that are available to you.
Most press releases are succinct at just a page long. Two pages tops. Ultimately, companies want to provide enough information so that news outlets have sufficient material for publishing their own stories about whatever the company is announcing in the release.
PRWeb is one of the better-known press release companies that receives lots of exposure. In a test, SteamFeed found that one of their releases received 57,489 impressions, 1,096 reads, 109 online pickups and 49 desirable interactions. There are five price tiers, ranging from $99 to $369.
Search Engine Optimization. Most press release sites are designed to allow you to optimize your press release for search engines using tags, anchor text links, header tags, etc. If you’re not sure, look on the PR website for a statement about press releases being optimized for search engines (SEO).
This list was very helpful, and we will certainly be using this information. However I wanted to ask how should we build up more hype for our upcoming Kickstarter? We are two kids without a lot of money, and without too many connections. We have a website, http://www.boldedesign.com (feel free to check it out and let us know your opinion). However, we can only get so much traffic by pooling from our connections.
However, if you’re approaching someone who blogs or vlogs in the spare time, this rule may not apply. Follow them on social media, find out when they’re active (consider that they may be using Hootsuite or similar to schedule posts) and try to approach them when they are online. This way, you’ll be ready to answer any questions immediately.
Let’s stick with the theme presented in that report: you run an vitamin web site specializing in weight-loss products. Through the process described in the report, you’ve nailed down a nice, newsworthy topic – teenagers and how they deal with issues of weight. But that’s a broad topic, not a story.
To close your tour press release, include the contact information of the person (again) in charge of handling press queries about the shows. Make a suggestion of what you want the person to reading the press release to do with this information: If you would like more information, or if you want to interview the band or review the show, please contact [so and so].
