Depending on how many press releases that you intend to submit (and how different they are in content from one another), you may want to narrow down your selection.
I tend to model my press releases after the ones written by the professional Public Relations folks I learned from during my 20 years of working in the offline world. In the earlier days of search engines, having your press release link to your business’ website — and, therefore, on the websites that published your press release — would help to improve your website’s search engine ranking. However, as search engine’s algorithms have become more sophisticated they’ve begun to penalize websites that try to take advantage of this system.
Thousands of news and releases go live daily. Not every author is aware that the bulk of these PR distributions end up undiscovered by desired reporters. Forbes magazine makes a startling statement. They state that the majority of businesses that publish a press release “wait for the inevitable flood of phone calls, emails and congratulations that never come. Even when they use a service like PR Newswire or Business Wire, many releases end up on page 67 of an independent TV station website in Reno, Nevada that few will ever read.”

Ideally, if you’re working with a label, you’ll have a publicist who has established relationships with music writers who can make introductions. First and foremost, don’t try to be clever, and don’t bother with puns. Think about it: what is the key message you’re trying to get across? Shrink that message down to no more than 15 words, and make sure there are a couple colourful verbs or jagged adjectives in there. Be objective, and make a bold statement that’s a little controversial. By hooking a journalist in with an audacious opening line, you’ve passed your first hurdle. Now, it’s time to turn your attention to the story itself.
Less is more. Let me say that again, do not go over-board with hyperlinks and anchor text in your press releases. Use only 2-3 links for every 500 words of text in your press release. Since press releases should be kept between 400-600 words, this means 2-3 links of anchor text for the entire press release. Using too many links makes the press release seem spammy and gives search engines a reason to penalize or block it from SERPs.
