This is a great read. Really helped me understand some of the questions I have been trying to get answered. I run a public company so we mainly focus on our Investor Relations and I totally agree that distribution services are for the most part worthless. So I have set out to learn how to obtain a better ROI and it has been tough. I have also found that many companies when sharing their results of you utilizing their service seem to be fluffed or not completely transparent.
A product press release is critical to inform journalists and customers about your exciting new offerings. A professional document designed to be picked up by reporters, a press release is a fantastic way to drive attention to your new product and create a social dynamic that’s ripe for sales.
Try to give a good reason for why a reporter in Pittsburgh would want to cover you: Is one of your band mates from the area? Did you have a particularly memorable experience the last time you visited? Maybe you’ve already been reviewed by a given writer and want to invite them to hear your new songs. Whatever the case, have a template that can be revised with each new recipient. Otherwise, your carefully crafted press release is likely to end up in a spam folder, or worse, the trash. 
Twitter is chock-full of reporters lamenting press releases or pitches that don’t clearly explain what the company does or what the announcement is actually about, so instead of being the butt of a joke, make your release incredibly easy to reference. 
I’ve been a tech journalist for 20+ years and I couldn’t agree with Craig more: (a) there are some very good pointers in this article, but (b) watch out for the message coming across as a template-driven thing, and (c) for God’s sake never, ever send me a press release as a Word attachment! I honestly never look at them. Well, not unless I already know something about the topic and I know the sender. And then I’ll ask them to please not send me things like that any more. I apologize if this comes across a bit rude. I followed your guidelines and did plenty of research into a press email. I sent to over 60 gaming sites using the videogamejournalist spreadsheet and filtered out any of the non-related ones. Out of those 60 only ONE big site PCgamer took the chance to reply. Everyone on reddit has told me that big walls of text like the one you are advising people are going to get trashed straight away. Such a shame. We have barely any exposure and our Kickstarter campaign will likely fail. It’s funny because our game is interesting enough to be written about, as Kotaku and RPS took their own initiative to write about our game earlier in the year. Now when I did a proper press release following your guidelines it has crippled us. Literally only one decent site of the 60 wrote about us. I’ll bet our email address is blacklisted now.
“Nofollow” all backlinks in press releases in order to avoid penalties by Google. This requires that each link’s tag contain the rel=”nofollow” attribute. If using nofollow links makes you hesitant about putting out a press release, then you’re doing it for the wrong reasons.

The balance of the press release serves to back up whatever claims were made in the lead and headline. Can you include new data? A remarkable graphic or video? A shareable SlideShare? If so, a creative angle will often help carry your content and increase the likelihood of social sharing. 
Firstly, we located all the free active PR distribution sites that we could find and then issued a series of press releases on each site. To make this a realistic test we used ‘real’ press releases containing news about our PR agency or client news. In total, we issued four releases using the sites (two releases about clients and two about Vitis PR).
