newspaper press releases press release preparation

This is a good list. Almost too good to be true–can you speak to the visibility and credibility of these free press release sites? We’ve already used one paid pr service, but are hesitant to pay a second one. We are a lean startup–we could allocate these services elsewhere. Thanks for the list, and thanks in advance for your valuable response!
Hi Mike, thank you for your comment and suggestion! I think adding that line would be a good improvement for the template. Once I get some time, I’ll try to make that adjustment. That said, I may take your suggestion a bit further. Instead of saying FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, I may something like FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE or EMBARGOED UNTIL [INSERT DATE] so developers know where to put the for immediate release or embargo date 🙂
In the not-too-distant past, businesses and SEO agencies used the sites as an SEO ploy. They would stuff low-quality news releases with keyword-filled backlinks and send them to scores of press release distribution sites in an effort to game Google’s algorithm. In response, Google’s 2012 Panda update severely penalized the sites. It rendered the SEO value of their links virtually worthless and classified many of the sites as spam.
To close your tour press release, include the contact information of the person (again) in charge of handling press queries about the shows. Make a suggestion of what you want the person to reading the press release to do with this information: If you would like more information, or if you want to interview the band or review the show, please contact [so and so].
The site is fast and easy to navigate, and there are plenty of resources, including white pages, how to’s and marketing strategies targeting online only businesses — making this site ideal for a small business.
If not, you must provide the details of your media/PR department in the Contact section. If you do not have dedicated team for this function, you must appoint somebody who will act as a link between the media and your people.
The dateline: Begin with a dateline of the city in which the press release originated and the date it was issued. This is especially important for small businesses that are distributing their press release to the local media.
Submitting a press release is self-explanatory and somewhat repetitious. Once you submit a press release at one of my recommended sites, you will realize that the other sites have a similar submission process. Depending on how many press releases that you intend to submit (and how different they are in content from one another), you may want to narrow down your selection.
Now, let’s look at the basic dos and don’ts of writing a press release for an event. Make your PR a cut above the rest. Hubspot also has a good blog on the matter and even offers a recommended press release template.
Frequently publishing online press releases generates reach and visibility. As little as 2-3 releases a month can already have a great impact on your business and confer you with significant advantages over your competitors.

The last one sounds harsh, but is probably the most important: you might be excited about your new marketing director or the launch of your new product, but will anyone else be interested? If the answer is no, hold off on that press release until you’ve got a better story.
Believe it or not, we still get occasional calls from people asking if our links are ‘do follow’ links and ‘how many can we add’. Those conversations are shut down pretty quick and the individuals are quickly educated on what the purpose of sending a press release is.
Professionals say to be mindful of what kind of organization you’re reaching out to as well: a reporter at an environmental magazine, for instance, might be turned off by a flood of paper-consuming messages coming from the fax machine.
The website looks quite professional, and the huge amount of information available on the site is quite impressive. There are visible releases on the Home page, and visitors can access press releases by Date, Industry, Subject and Region. The site does offer distribution services and seem to have solid results with this element of the site. They even have a Service page, where you get an idea of the many options that are available to you.
As the Internet has assumed growing prominence in the news cycle, press release writing styles have necessarily evolved.[4] Editors of online newsletters, for instance, often lack the staff to convert traditional press release prose into more readable, print-ready copy.[5]
Your final paragraph should be a succinct and informative boilerplate. A boilerplate is typically 3 or 4 sentences long and acts as a mini-biography. This is your chance to include a few interesting snippets about yourself, touching on your passions and inspirations.
I’ve been a tech journalist for 20+ years and I couldn’t agree with Craig more: (a) there are some very good pointers in this article, but (b) watch out for the message coming across as a template-driven thing, and (c) for God’s sake never, ever send me a press release as a Word attachment! I honestly never look at them. Well, not unless I already know something about the topic and I know the sender. And then I’ll ask them to please not send me things like that any more. I know it sounds like a very grumpy attitude, but it’s just how it is. I’m sure the majority of journos feel the same about press release attachments. By all means consider these structure pointers but just put it all into the email body!
Now that we’ve established that press release distribution services tend to provide garbage ROI, let’s talk about what does work: telling interesting stories in a way that’s easy to understand and ties in with company messaging, while providing value to your target audience. This is difficult to say and even harder to do — which is where a PR agency or in-house resource can come in handy.
Dateline – contains the release date and usually the originating city of the press release. If the date listed is after the date that the information was actually sent to the media, then the sender is requesting a news embargo, which journalists are under no obligation to honor.
To put it another way: this paragraph should give your reader all the information he or she needs to understand the “next steps,” regardless of whether that’s where to find your upcoming event or how to contact your new HR manager.
This paragraph is for giving your reader clear reasons why they should write about your band and review your album (and just saying because it’s a great album won’t cut it). Use this paragraph to mention things like:
Recently, Globe Newswire has upped its game by getting more heavily involved in reaching social media influencers and providing more in-depth analytics related to social media. If you’re releasing company information across the Internet, you want to know how it’s performing and who’s writing about it, and that’s the goal of Globe Newswire’s advanced analytics offerings.
That being said, press releases today no longer hold the same SEO value they did several years ago, as Google started recognizing that some companies were using them to gain backlinks, rather than sharing news topics.
