Thousands of news and releases go live daily. Not every author is aware that the bulk of these PR distributions end up undiscovered by reporters. Forbes magazine makes a startling statement. They state that the majority of businesses that publish a press release “wait for the inevitable flood of phone calls, emails and congratulations that never come. Even when they use a service like PR Newswire or Business Wire, many releases end up on page 67 of an independent TV station website in Reno, Nevada that few will ever read.”
Hi Makori, thanks for the comment and great question. The headline and the first sentence are both incredibly important and should both be treated as grabbers. I would argue that the headline is the most important element though because it is often the element that gets people to click and read the press release.
Every element of your message needs to drive to your objective, e.g. driving traffic to a web site, getting people to register, or inspiring media coverage. Keep this in mind as you develop your message.

Dateline – CITY, State, Month Day, Year (eReleases) –The opening sentence is the most important element in a press release where you should succinctly summarize what is being announced. The opening paragraph should clearly get the reader’s attention through a strong hook while providing the most important facts. As a best practice, write your press release first then come back and develop the opening paragraph as a summary of the press release. Then compare this new opening paragraph with your initial first paragraph.
