guide to writing a press release make your own newspaper for free

1. Headline. Grab the reader’s attention with a strong, catchy headline with keywords that people will most likely use in their search. This is your opener and what will make your reader want to read on. Include the name of the event and either the location or theme of the event. You won’t want to give too many details up front. If you’re writing an online press release for an event, know that Google will index 60 characters and Yahoo, 120 characters. Use Title Case for your headline. See what PRWeb says about press release headlines.

To double space or not to double space – it’s probably not necessary as most editing these days is done on computer, as long as your release is easy to read. Short paragraphs with a space between each and slightly wider than normal margins are helpful.
Avoid head-and-shoulders shots – think more creatively. Be careful with branding, as shots that have large logos in the background can be a huge turn off. Photos that may be reproduced in black and white also need careful thought to get the tones right.
PRLog offers free press release services for general search engines, their website, industry, and tag and location based RSS feeds, and they offer a front page placement on their site if your news is released on PRLog before anywhere else.
For example, we were pitching a summer concert series on behalf of one of our clients. Instead of sending out a media alert, we designed an oversized concert ticket and incorporated the information within. It ended up being a fun and an attention-grabbing way to relay the news – and got great coverage too!
There is a source of natural color that cannot be replicated: quotes. Including a good quote from someone in the company or close to the product/event can give a human element to the press release, as well as being a source of information in its own right.
Use active verbs rather than passive verbs to keep the reader interested in your story – Active verbs are words that show that someone or something takes an action, such as, “State delegates from the National Organization of Women marched on Capitol Hill today demanding better health care for single mothers.” In this sentence, marched is an active verb showing movement. Passive verbs show that someone or something is being acted upon: “Capitol was besieged by unicyclists on Saturday.”
Your press release isn’t going to do anything for you unless you can get it in front of people who will cover it. That’s why we recommend eReleases, which can distribute your release to over 5,900 publications via the Associated Press and PR Newswire networks, as well as their own network of sites.
For starters, you’ll have the most success if you pitch a story, not a press release. When you’re pitching media, you’re pitching real people, who have writing interests, beats and topics they like to cover. So while your press release should provide all the details about your announcement, your “pitch” should be tailored to the reporter and explain how your story meets their interests.
The dateline: Begin with a dateline of the city in which the press release originated and the date it was issued. This is especially important for small businesses that are distributing their press release to the local media.
Just like writing the perfect blog post title, setting up your press release for success starts with your headline. You only have one line to work with, which can seem scary, but consider diction carefully to make your headline captivating.
Here’s a tip that I just recently found out, there are a few sites that resell prnewswire’s products. The one’s that I have tried are Press Release Distribution to Major News & Media Outlets and www.onlineprnewscom . I’ve heard about ereleases too but haven’t tried them yet.
A press release is a written communication that reports specific but brief information about an event, circumstance or other happening. It’s typically tied to a business or organization and is provided to media through a variety of means.
Canonical tags should be utilized in the event that large chunks of text from your site will be pasted right into the press release, or you plan to place the press release directly on your site or blog.

The music is ready for its public debut – now you just need to know how to write a press release. When you write a music press release, you need to get in and get out – in other words; you have to communicate all of the necessary information in a clear and engaging manner without overstaying your welcome with the reader.

There’s a lot of squabble online about which press release distribution service is the best. Speaking from personal experience, there are only a handful that are even worth using. I’ve nailed Wall Street Journal time and time again using Berkshire Hathaway’s Business Wire, but it costs $400 or more for a release with a 400-word limit. (They charge you for each 100 words after that.) You’ll also pay a pretty penny to add photos, videos, social media signals, and so forth.
4) Boost social buzz with tweets, Facebook likes, Google+ fans, and LinkedIn business connections. Many press release services allow readers to share your press release with people whom they know via social media.
You must know that a reader already has all the information they need to profile your image. A press release is just a way to help them add in more information to what they already know. So, always ensure that you write your press release in a way that it has valuable for them to read. You need to write a concise and a helpful piece and most importantly a valuable one.
I’ve been a tech journalist for 20+ years and I couldn’t agree with Craig more: (a) there are some very good pointers in this article, but (b) watch out for the message coming across as a template-driven thing, and (c) for God’s sake never, ever send me a press release as a Word attachment! I honestly never look at them. Well, not unless I already know something about the topic and I know the sender. And then I’ll ask them to please not send me things like that any more. I know it sounds like a very grumpy attitude, but it’s just how it is. I’m sure the majority of journos feel the same about press release attachments. By all means consider these structure pointers but just put it all into the email body!
If your press release has gone onto a second page, you’ve probably got two or more stories. (Or you’ve padded it out with irrelevant, self-congratulatory quotes from ‘important’ people you’ve been told have to be included.)

Keep it Objective. Readers will respond better to a press release that gives the details of a show than they will to one that simply tells everyone how great an upcoming event is. The more objective your press release can be, the better.
