Ensure Your Kickstarter Has Everything Writers Want to See Because many games-to-be promoted on Kickstarter have not come to fruition with what they promised, writers are cautious about which Kickstarters they cover. AT&T has 3 stores in Times Square that are perfect for a massive advertising campaign, and by letting Warner Bros. deck their stores with the movie’s iconic figures, AT&T benefits from the increased attention and foot traffic as well. This press release generated excitement for the movie premiere while giving AT&T an opportunity to increase its marketing opportunities.
Timing is crucial when disseminating press releases to a large audience. You need to think logically about when the audience you’re targeting, whether it be reporters or readers, will be inundated with news and avoid that time period. Often, whatever hour of the day I see fit for the subject matter and industry that we are distributing a release on, I’ll send it at the 6th minute of the hour. For example, distributing a release on the wire at 1:06 pm will face far less competition than if you send it at 1:00 pm with all of the other releases that are circulating.
And while it may be tempting to craft a press release that embellishes your company’s accomplishments or twists the facts to make a story sound more intriguing to the media, remember: Press releases live in the public domain, which means your customers and prospective customers can see them. So instead of thinking of a press release solely as a ticket to earning news coverage, you should also think of it as a valuable piece of marketing content.
For starters, you’ll have the most success if you pitch a story, not a press release. When you’re pitching media, you’re pitching real people, who have writing interests, beats and topics they like to cover. So while your press release should provide all the details about your announcement, your “pitch” should be tailored to the reporter and explain how your story meets their interests.
Teamwork will go very far in helping to develop an effective press release. Collaboration is how some of the finest marketing pieces are created. So why limit the idea of the piece and its composition to just your ideas? Rather, brainstorm with a few others and co-create and co-write the piece together. Because reporters are busy people, you must assume that they will only read the first sentence and then scan the rest — and even that’s a generous assumption. Get the message of your press release out quickly. Every important point should be addressed in the first few sentences. The subsequent paragraphs should be for supporting information.

However just imagine if you added some great graphics or video clips to give your posts more, “pop”! I definitely agree with the 1st and 3rd points (make the first paragraph very strong, and leave clear contact details) but the 2nd point will vary from publication to publication. I’ve written for niche industry publications where my main job was to scour press release sites and find the latest stories/updates, daily. Then, I would re-hash these stories with my own words (in the voice of the publication).
Not all press releases contain a release date, but if you decide to include one, put it at below your logo on the left margin. This should either say “FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE”, or “FOR RELEASE ON [date] AT [time]”.
