I don’t know about you, but I’m a little tired of hearing all this talk about the death of the press release. Any time a new forum for marketing comes around, people want to write off press release distribution as old and outdated.
Too many quotes are put into press releases simply to acknowledge the presence of a CEO, partner, sponsor, client, etc. There’s nothing wrong with having endorsements, just make sure they say something worthwhile.

The lead, or first sentence, should grab the reader and say concisely what is happening. For example, if the headline is Careen Publishing releases new WWII novel, the first sentence might be something like, Carpren Publishing, Ltd., today released their first World War II novel by celebrated writer Darcy Kay. It expands the headline enough to fill in some of the details, and brings the reader further into the story. The next one to sentences should then expand upon the lead.
In the words of Robert Wyne, a prominent Forbes contributor, press releases “are formulaic, by nature, but so are poetry, tweets, columns and other written communications. Everyone has constraints. Chefs work within an 8-inch pan to create an omelet, and the great ones know how to pick the best ingredients, and mix them to create a savory sensation. The remainder of the body paragraphs serve to complete the story you have introduced in the headline and 1st body paragraph. Use short paragraphs (2-4 sentences), and feel free to include statistics, hyperlinks, media content and quotes.
In the center or left of the page, include a headline that summarizes the information in the press release. That might be, “Jones Promoted to General Manager,” or “The Whoseewhatsit Named Top Toy of 2016.”
Hi Sam! Thank you for the comment. The rule to always follow with a press release is if you don’t have something impressive to share/show, then don’t. It’s great that you have art assets done, but I’m not sure if that is enough to go on. Perhaps if you had a free, playable demo in addition to the art assets, or were inviting people to a beta, etc., then you could for the announcement-type press release, but without those extra, impressive items, I may hold off. Hope that helps.
