Journalists are generally taught to get as many of the five Ws (who, what, where, why and when) in the opening line of news stories, so if you want examples of great first lines for press releases, look no further than your daily newspaper.
The rest of the body of the press release should answer all of the questions a journalist might have about the product, service or event that you’re announcing. Although a press release is a public relations tool, it should not read as overly promotional [source: Concept Marketing Group].  If it sounds too much like a sales pitch, it will lose credibility in the eyes of the journalist.

A press release is the quickest and easiest way to get free publicity. If well written, a press release can result in multiple published articles about your firm and its products. And that can mean new prospects contacting you asking you to sell to them. Talk about low-hanging fruit!
Whether you’re marketing a new business venture, promoting a new book, or simply drumming up some interest for an upcoming non-profit event, the press release is an invaluable tool that can make or break your efforts at gleaning some much-desired media attention.
Now, let’s look at the basic dos and don’ts of writing a press release for an event. Make your PR a cut above the rest. Hubspot also has a good blog on the matter and even offers a recommended press release template.
Another trick is to imagine your story is going to be covered on a TV or radio programme. A presenter generally has around 5-6 seconds to introduce each item eg And coming up next … why a local cafe owner is giving a free coffee this weekend to anyone born in July. If your story was going to be featured on the radio today, how would the presenter introduce it? Asking yourself that question should give you the top line of your story.
At the end of your press release, you should include the word END or ###. This will tell your readers that nothing follows. It also tells journalists that the end of the press release has been reached.
If you were going to write a press release about your new product, it needs to be newsworthy. In other words, nobody wants to read a press release that just says, “Hey, we made a thing!” Instead, arrange your press release so that it includes the most unique benefits of your new product.
Selikoff also warns against using a canned quote talking about how great your company is. Use a quote that provides some insight instead. It’s also helpful to know some publications’ standards on using quotes from a release. While blogs and very small publications will often use information directly from a release, and re-use quotes you include in the release in their story, major publications most often will not.
Content marketers have been turning to press releases as a way to promote their content. And why shouldn’t they? Release distribution allows you to reach a wide and often engaged audience through a trusted network of websites, and can drive traffic to owned media channels.
While this may seem like a simple approach, it serves a critical purpose. First, it gives journalists something to pull out of your press release and use in publication. Second, it inspires confidence within the people reading your press release.
eNewsWire is an online press release service offering both free and paid distribution. eNewWire distributes business, organisational and personal news and press releases using the Internet. Submit your press release here.
On the other hand, a press release is not meant for all public and if you want to target social media or your potential users you can also write an alternative press release. Check out this great post by CopyBlogger on how to write a social media press release.
The remainder of the body paragraphs serve to complete the story you have introduced in the headline and 1st body paragraph. Be sure to write in a journalistic style so that media outlets can use your text as-is. Use short paragraphs (2-4 sentences), and feel free to include statistics, hyperlinks, media content and quotes.
However, a well-timed press release on the picture put this little book of….umm…whatever…right into the limelight.  This caused the book sales to skyrocket and even had Rob Gronkowski himself do a fake TV trailer for a “Gronking to Remember” movie with HBO’s Funny Or Die.  (Not shown here because it’s pretty inappropriate – I’ve got standards.)

There are many differences between advertising and public relations and in PR, the media is not required to cover your story. You send your press releases hoping they will pick it up for their magazine, newspaper or local newscast.

Remember, you are courting editors, journalists, or TV producers – not consumers. They’re not looking for fancy formatting and they certainly aren’t hoping to be impressed by a writer’s expansive vocabulary. Stick to the point and be sure to include the essentials. Press releases are usually no more than one or two pages long and contain complete media contact information, a headline, dateline, the body of the press release, and three hash marks that state, in journalistic terms, ‘THE END.’
Firstly, we located all the free active PR distribution sites that we could find and then issued a series of press releases on each site. To make this a realistic test we used ‘real’ press releases containing news about our PR agency or client news. In total, we issued four releases using the sites (two releases about clients and two about Vitis PR). Each time we issued a release, we reviewed the results, only including the sites that we felt performed well in subsequent tests. The table below shows how many releases were issued in each ’round’:
We then write a release and distribute it manually to each of our free press release sites, including a link to the new vegan pizza page. This process usually improves that page’s visibility in Google and helps the pizza shop owner outrank his competitors for keyword terms related to “vegan pizza” in his local market.
If a paid service does not include media monitoring, it’s essential to employ a media monitoring and measurement service to learn when media outlets publish your releases and measure the effectiveness of your PR efforts.

A subheading can be a way to get the inform/intrigue balance right – if your headline is more heavily one function than the other, the subheading can be the place to compensate and redress the balance.
The site offers several different press distribution options, including a free plan to submit up to one posting per day.  They also provide great press release writing tips on their “PR Resources” page.
Thanks for dropping in with your unique insight. I definitely agree with the 1st and 3rd points (make the first paragraph very strong, and leave clear contact details) but the 2nd point will vary from publication to publication. I’ve written for niche industry publications where my main job was to scour press release sites and find the latest stories/updates, daily. Then, I would re-hash these stories with my own words (in the voice of the publication).

Hello. Although I personally reckon this post is a bit prescriptive (I prefer devs to just say Hey, I’ve made a NEW THING! Here it is!, there are some good tips regarding content to possibly include. (Just, y’know, avoid doing the robot thing. I get 50+ PRs on a good a day (on a bad day, I get more), and many of them look identical in structure and that’s a FIVE-ALARM WARNING to bin every one of the things.) In terms of format, though, speaking as a journo, sending me a Word document is a really great way to get me to immediately delete your PR. Send the text in the *body* of the email, so I can easily access and search it later. Do not make me load up some other app or even fire up Quick Look to view your copy. (Also, a *huge* number of devs I know don’t use Word these days, threatening any fancy formatting. PDF’s fine for an online press kit, though—no problems copying and pasting from it, assuming you’ve done the PDF right.) And I’m sure this sounds grumpy as hell, but when you’re bombarded by email, you need to be able to filter things very quickly. A well-written press release is the first step in getting some attention for your new album. Use this template to help you organize your information. Note that this template was written with bands and indie labels in mind as the writers and the media in mind as the readers. PR folks and radio pluggers will want to take a slightly different approach with their press releases, and one- sheets for distributors and stores should also be slightly different.
