I feel that we used the narrative to not only gain interest in the story, but to gain sympathy and understanding of the author’s plight, which contributed to the press release success (more than 5,000 hits). One must tell a compelling story in a limited amount of space in a press release. It’s more than the who, what, when, and where model. You want the reader to be drawn in immediately.
You must put a name to the quote. Journalists despise having to quote faceless representatives. When businesses choose to hide behind the word “spokesperson”, it demonstrates a clear lack of resolve. I apologize if this comes across a bit rude. I followed your guidelines and did plenty of research into writing a press email. I sent to over 60 gaming sites using the videogamejournalist spreadsheet and filtered out any of the non-related ones. Out of those 60 only ONE big site PCgamer took the chance to reply. Everyone on reddit has told me that big walls of text like the one you are advising people are going to get trashed straight away. Such a shame. We have barely any exposure and our Kickstarter campaign will likely fail. The human brain processes images 60,000 times faster than it does text. Use that to your advantage in your press release. Visuals capture a reader’s attention, and allow people to more easily digest information.
If you’re publishing your press release on a distribution service like PR Newswire or Business Wire, avoid publishing it on the hour (e.g., 1 p.m., or 3 p.m., or 5 p.m.). The reason? Quotes add life to your press release. When you add a relevant quote to your press release which emphasizes on the core announcement, the media will quote that in their own coverage of the news and you will likely get the attention and generate the positive image you had hoped to establish.
Avoid reposting the actual press release on your website because this can denigrate your content authenticity and page-score ranking with Google and the other search engines. Instead, write a unique teaser paragraph or two, and then link out to the release on the host site that distributed it or one of the major media outlets picked it up.
