A few years back, people used to go through the newspapers for the news but nowadays, the internet has replaced the role of the newspapers. Am I right in saying this or not? I am sure that you will agree to the fact that the first thing we do in the morning is to check our social media accounts. We go through the news feed on our Facebook profile and scan through the headlines on Twitter. We do all of this to see what is trending but what exactly makes us stop and actually read something? It’s the catchy and engaging content. That is where writing an engaging press release comes in.
Here’s a tip that I just recently found out, there are a few sites that resell prnewswire’s products. The one’s that I have tried are Press Release Distribution to Major News & Media Outlets and www.onlineprnewscom . I’ve heard about ereleases too but haven’t tried them yet.
For example, if you were writing a press release from Tesco apologising to residents for the upheaval caused by the building of a new store, you wouldn’t write “Residents are up in arms over Tesco building works” – that’s what the paper might print. You write “Tesco is taking residents’ concerns seriously and holding a public meeting on…”
Two recent examples of that: some company sent me a release about WIFI in prisons. Did you know that prisons are now, finally, getting WIFI? I didn’t. So I pitched that to my editor at The Guardian, and she came back with an idea for a larger story about prisons and whether the internet should be considered a “right” for inmates to have.
The short of the long (many great points mentioned in this article) is that make sure you are looking to distribute a press release for the right reasons and not to try and gain the system. When you do it properly, you can certainly earn excellent rewards.
Ideally, quotes will be from key stakeholders in your company including your executive team, project leads, or those directly impacted by your announcement. Quoting key figures and authorities underlines the importance of your development. The chosen quote should shape your narrative and emphasize the core of the announcement. Don’t ask everyone in your office for a comment or feel compelled to quote all 25 people included in the acquisition — pick one or two critical spokespeople and focus the quotes around their unique perspective.
It is a communication means that seeks to inform a reader about what’s new, what’s to come, as well as what to expect. Press releases aren’t adverts per se; they are stories meant to create awareness about a function, an event, or a situation that has never been there before.
RULE #3: Write it like a reporter would write it. If your press release looks and feels like a real article, reporters will often just file it as a story with minimal editing. Therefore, it’s up to you to make sure that your press release looks and feels like a real article. No biz blab!
Dateline – CITY, State, Month Day, Year (eReleases) –The opening sentence is the most important element in a press release where you should succinctly summarize what is being announced. The opening paragraph should clearly get the reader’s attention through a strong hook while providing the most important facts. As a best practice, write your press release first then come back and develop the opening paragraph as a summary of the press release. Then compare this new opening paragraph with your initial first paragraph.
This is a little obvious, but you need something newsworthy to issue a press release, otherwise who cares? Have a look at Canadian ecommerce company Well.ca and their impressive list of awards for which they’ve garnered significant media attention:

You have listed Newswire.com under your list of free press release websites. This appears to be incorrect as it is free to sign up but they want a minimum of $99 for a press release. Please can you check and review this page as I have just wasted 30 minutes and I am sure others must have had the same experience.
eReleases: eReleases provides wire distribution via the Associated Press. What this means is that your press release will become accessible to more than 30,000 journalists, such as those writing for the New York Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, etc. through the Associated Press’ webfeed.
2. The PRWeb version of the release will likely get “picked up” by 200+ media outlets, ranging from Digital Journal to The Boston Globe. This is automatically syndicated and not editorially reviews, and, to be frank, isn’t worth much of anything. Here’s what this looks like in action:
