Include a call to action in your release. This is information on what you want the public to do with the information that you are releasing. For example, do you want readers to buy a product? If so, include information on where the product is available. Do you want readers to visit your website to enter a contest or learn more about your organization? If so, include the website address or a phone number.

The press release was an announcement that my client’s books were available at the Fest for Beatles Fans event in Chicago and they can be purchased already signed by the authors. 5. CALL TO ACTION: Most readers won’t make it to the bottom of the page. Insert your call to action link for the public after the first or second paragraph. Restrained use of links directs readers to a specific call to action.

Another trick is to imagine your story is going to be covered on a TV or radio programme. A presenter generally has around 5-6 seconds to introduce each item eg And coming up next … why a local cafe owner is giving a free coffee this weekend to anyone born in July. If your story was going to be featured on the radio today, how would the presenter introduce it? Asking yourself that question should give you the top line of your story.
Press releases are very costly, which is the main reason for any controversy on their merit. If everyone who could afford to send a press release did so, it would dilute the overall value. Press releases have undoubtedly lost some authority over the years as so many businesses use them for self-promotion and Panda updates target thin content. However, if you’re sending a press release with newsworthy content and not spam, then this will not work against you. Note that the cost suggests they are not the best tactic for very small budgets.
