Hi, my game is in the early stages of code development but much of the art assets are already complete. I was just wondering, is it too early for me to make a press release? Should I wait until I have more of the code done?
A press release is a written communication that reports specific but brief information about an event, circumstance or other happening. It’s typically tied to a business or organization and is provided to media through a variety of means.
At the end of the release, you need to indicate that the release is ended. The usual method of transmitting your release is via fax, and this is the best way to let journalists know they have received the entire release. Type End on the first line after your text is completed. If your release goes over one page, type MORE at the bottom of the first page. Then retype the title and the date on page two, so there is no question which release the second page goes with.
OnlinePRNews.com – Is the place where traditional media press releases are supercharged with multimedia, social media, and search engine optimization, to give you the most visibility for your news releases. Our SEO press releases, multimedia press releases, and newswire press release distribution put your news in front of the right people at the right time.
Put all your thought and energy into those first lines – including the email subject line. Think about it as writing a news article with a grabbing headline and a sub-heading. If it’s good enough, the journalist may use it and this will increase your chances of getting through. Who wouldn’t want to have their work cut out for them?
6.     Use your news to get more customers. With today’s online press releases, the media is no longer the only audience you’re writing for. 80 million people get their news online every day. Many of these people are your customers. So, you need to keep your buyers in mind when writing your press releases. And no, that doesn’t mean turning your press release into an advertisement.

A common oversight that can render a press release ineffectual is a lack of contact information for reporters to follow up with. Whether you or someone else at the company is the point of contact, don’t forget to include an email address and phone number on the release (preferably at the top of the page).
Thanks for the post and the great dialogue in the comments. Where/how should I include the press kit on my game website? For example, could do a link to download the press kit (i.e. PDF/Word docs, images in a zip file), and/or expect folks to copy/paste it from the launch website itself. Thanks in advance for your advice 🙂
I like to choose brands or long phrases that include one of my target keywords. I rarely choose exact match keywords (10% or less) because of risk of being penalized by Google. This is referred to as “over-optimization.”
This may come as surprise to small business owners, as a number of press release distribution services advertise that their press releases are “SEO optimized” or “SEO friendly”. What they mean is that the press release is coded in a way where if a person types in certain keywords, particularly into Google News, then the press release is more likely to appear in the results than a non-optimized release. How much more likely? I haven’t seen one company yet give hard numbers. It’s more likely that this is an advertising gimmick that press release distribution services use to sell their service to less informed clients.
Write the body copy. The press release should be written as you want it to appear in a news story. And remember this: most journalists are very busy, and don’t have time to research your company’s big announcement, so much of what you write for your press release will be what the journalists use in their writeup of your big event. Whatever you want them to say, this is where you put it.
Although learning how to write a press release for a product can seem difficult, it’s a critical skill for any company, and following these tips will help you learn to do it in your business. From crafting the hook to optimizing your press release for SEO, there are dozens of little things that can spell difference between success and failure for your press releases. Happy writing!
Create a compelling title. The heading or title section is one of the most critical elements of an effective press release. You will need to include the name of the new product and a catchy title around it. Write a creative sentence using the company name, followed by the the new product and the primary or key benefit of the product.
Below the headline often comes a brief, one-line summary of the press release [source: PR Leap Blog].  Like the headline, the summary should draw the reader in quickly and motivate them to learn more.
good site by the way, informative and helpful…I am wondering if you happen to know of the 50+ sites that the PressReleasePoint.com folks send their releases too…for $15 bucks it’s a steal, but I also don’t want to duplicate my efforts either…I did sign up, sent out my first release through them a couple hours ago… I did also write them to ask them the same question, but since you seem to know a great deal about (free sites in general), I was wondering if you knew the answer to my question…thank you in advance…
First we are going to look at a press that we at Fit Small Business recently sent out, so that we can point out the attributes of a good press release. You should look out for these points when viewing the other examples below.
Write the third paragraph of the body. This section can contain a quote from the product manager, CEO or other representative from the company launching the product to discuss why this product is so important. This section can be up to three sentences long.
While there are some positive press releases used to promote positive events such as extension plans or product releases, some occasions ask a brand to come up with a defensive one. Since positive press releases can be threatening to some, they can publish some negative news in retaliation. When it comes to writing a defensive press release, these can be a sharpest weapon to protect and defend a company from bad publicity.

A boilerplate is a short paragraph that explains the identity of a company and what it does. Boilerplate is optional, but it doesn’t hurt to have one to help identify your business. Think of boilerplates as a thumbnail sketch of your company that provides a little background information to the press. Once you’ve written a boilerplate, you can use it in all of your press releases.
The majority of relevant journalists today can be found on Twitter actively sharing industry trends, news, and thoughts. While 140 characters doesn’t leave a lot of room for “fluff,” it forces publicists to create a hyper-focused, creative, and straightforward message that can be seen not only by the journalist, but also by their entire follower base. Better yet, pitch when replying to one of their relevant tweets. Make a pitch public and you’d be surprised how quickly others may respond!
Every element of your message needs to drive to your objective, e.g. driving traffic to a web site, getting people to register, or inspiring media coverage. Keep this in mind as you develop your message.
Tell the reader how they can get more information and promotional copies (if applicable). That means you should include the email address and phone number of the person in charge of handling press inquiries. Also, include links to the website and the social networking platform used most often by the artist (if applicable). That’s it! Easy, huh?

This should be factual and to the point, but it doesn’t need to be boring. Consider finding unconventional ways to say conventional things. If you can make a journalist smile, you will stand a much greater chance of making an impression on them, and thus, having your book featured.
G. Pricing, availability and coming up. Just a line or 2 full of facts: stating the app’s price, the OS requirements, countries, etc. What I like to add is a really short preview/teaser of what’s coming up: the next app to come in the same app series or something exciting. Make sure you don’t confuse the reader, though.
Your release should be relatively short – two or three pages, max. Keeping the release to one page does not necessarily improve readability, which is what you’re aiming for. Subheads are also useful to grab the reader’s attention.
Criteria: When developing this list, I looked at several variables, such as: Alexa ranking, Page Rank, credibility indicators, and style. Sites that didn’t make the rank included: simple blogs, industry specific, dead sites (no recent press releases), and sites with broken navigation or ordering systems.
My Rating: I compute the above statistics and rate each site based on its credibility, traffic, popularity and the quality of results that it yields in the end (after the website distributes your press release).
Let’s stick with the theme presented in that report: you run an vitamin web site specializing in weight-loss products. Through the process described in the report, you’ve nailed down a nice, newsworthy topic – teenagers and how they deal with issues of weight. But that’s a broad topic, not a story.
With press releases for broadcast media, the same rules apply in terms of writing and presentation. It is not uncommon to be invited for interview and find that, particularly in live interview situations, the interviewer has only read the first paragraph of the release or scanned it in the 30 seconds before the interview.
Communicate the 5 W’s (and the H) clearly. Who, what, when, where, why ––and how–– should tell the reader everything they need to know. Consider the checklist in context with the points below, using the example above to generate our press release:
